Always personally found it odd when players care that much about numbers where they'll change it when whatever they prefer becomes available. I understand a lot of the time it's branding but it's still odd.

Agreed. Numbers are largely irrelevant these days. 4 of our star midfielders at 16, 17, 20 and 47. The keeper at 31, one of the CBs at 14. The days of 1-11 (what us FOCs grew up with) are long since gone. It seems that some players request a number for personal reasons. Didn't Phil pick 47 for family reasons. And I'm guessing that Eddy might be in a similar position. And I suppose marketing might play a part. The Nordic Manshield was always going to get the 9 shirt, once Gabby's move to Arsenal was confirmed.
