Squad Numbers - 2022/23

Agreed. Numbers are largely irrelevant these days. 4 of our star midfielders at 16, 17, 20 and 47. The keeper at 31, one of the CBs at 14. The days of 1-11 (what us FOCs grew up with) are long since gone. It seems that some players request a number for personal reasons. Didn't Phil pick 47 for family reasons. And I'm guessing that Eddy might be in a similar position. And I suppose marketing might play a part. The Nordic Manshield was always going to get the 9 shirt, once Gabby's move to Arsenal was confirmed.
I think Ederson prefers 1, but took the next available 1. 1 taken by Bravo, 11 by Zinchenko, 21 by Silva, so logically 31 was next. I think he just doesn't care enough to swap back to 1 now that's available.

Zinc wasn’t #11, when Ederson arrived.

Eddie has had the opportunity to take #1 for a couple of seasons, now, so I doubt he’ll be ditching #31 in the near future.

I really think that Palmer should have a much lower number, and maybe McAtee too.

You're right. I guess #11 is not much of a keeper number, so he didn't take it. Kolarov had the number before Zinchenko, but he left the season before Ederson arrived.

Yes, that's what I thought as well.

That’s how we play under Pep.

——————————————1 Ederson——————————————-
———————————2 Stones———3 Dias————————————
———————4 Walker———5 Rodri———6 Cancelo——————
7 Mahrez—8 de Bruyne—9 Haaland—10 Bernardo—11 Foden
-----------------------------1 Dowd-------------------------------
-------------------2 Book--------------3 Pardoe------------------
---------------4 Doyle-------5 Heslop----------6 Oakes---------
--7 Summerbee---8 Bell----9 Lee------10 Young--11 Coleman

this all started with beckham going on about wearing 23 because he loved michael jordan which i suspect was bollocks.

Hopefully this gets to the right person. Can't imagine there are that many Cancelo shirts already sold and they should do the right thing and swap them.

We all know how this is going to play out.

The tweet gets spread far and wide to much criticism, City eventually do the right thing, offer swaps and maybe even pretend Cancelo is paying for it out of the goodness of his own heart.

Why can't the club employ someone in customer services who realises this?

I specifically remember when Kun changed from 16 to 10... those who bought his shirt with no. 16 could either return it for a 10 or get it signed

What is especially shitty about this, is that they willingly swapped in 2015 when Aguero took 10.

IIRC they had two options for anyone who bought 16, either send it back for a shirt with the new number 10 or send it back and he would sign the 16 shirt.

Given not too many players change numbers without too much notice it really wouldn't be a huge thing to let people who bought them with the incorrect number exchange them.... they could event get the player to sign the incorrect shirt and then auction them off for charity, really it would be a win-win AND if the club did that, likely it would boost sales via the club over picking them up on the high street....

Especially shitty?

Just because the club did something nice once, they're under no obligation to do it seven years later. It's not the policy.

When you buy a shirt before the end of the transfer window, it's the risk you take. To be fair to the club, they did take Cancelo shirts off the website before they announced the change.

Would it be a good bit of PR and probably worth the cost to just exchange or refund the shirts? Yes. Are they under some moral obligation to do so? No.

When Aguero switched 16 to 10 they gave those buying a chance for a replacement or to get the shirt with 16 signed. I opted for the latter. It was returned by post to City... and conveniently lost. Managed to get the shirt with 10 as a replacement. Never ever trusted the City shop

I agree with the principle of all of that but it needs to made beyond crystal clear what the policy is.
If you’re buying at the store before numbers are finalised, you should be told verbally before the purchase and if it’s online, it should be unmissable on the page if you’re ordering a shirt with name/number.
This seems to happen every summer at one or two of the big clubs and could be avoided if the policies weren’t buried in the small print.
