He's in a no win situation. Either they stay up, in which case their supporters will say "we should have stayed up anyway" or they go down and he becomes an instant villian after a decade giving his all for them.

It looks to me like they're planning for a Championship campaign early... i cant understand why else Shearer would say yes now!?

Don't see it like that myself. Loads of geordies think they're for the drop, so if he saves them, he'll be (even more of) a hero.
