St Mark’s first

We were born in Gorton
we moved to Moss Side
from there our name spread far and wide etc
Born in West Gorton, then Gorton, Ardwick etc. The West Gorton bit often gets overlooked but it was a separate township in between Ardwick and Gorton. Each move tended (not quite always) to take the club to a bigger area. What an amazing journey.

Exactly why it should be 1880 on the badge!!
But 1880 is only the earliest known game. For various reasons I think they played before this date. 1894 is MCFC’s foundation and correct. If MUFC want to lie and say they were formed in 1878 instead of 1902 that’s their fake history.

Yeah i know mate, i have all your books.

I was just quoting the words of that song, sung to the matchstalk mens song

Wouldn't it be something to be able to tell some of those lads what became of their club!
Walter Chew, who claimed his brother founded the club, was still around into the 1940s and was interviewed by the BBC and others about the club’s history. He saw the club go from nothing to League Champions. As did Lawrence Furniss who was another player in the 1880s, though not the first season. Furniss was the chairman responsible for Maine Rd being built and was president when they won the league in 1937.

Ok - but companies do change names - but keep their formation date.
It was a new company. St Mark’s and every other iteration is absolutely important and must not be forgotten but in 1894 MCFC was a new company (and briefly Ardwick played on after MCFC established). The issue is that MUFC should never use 1878 - the club was established in 1902 in a similar way to MCFC and even if they somehow claim it was different in 1902 there’s no evidence of Newton Heath ever playing a game of football before 1880. In fact their earliest known game is a week after St Mark’s.

Thanks - so what happened to St Marks in 1894 - did they continue or were they enveloped into the new company?
