St Mark’s first

Thanks - so what happened to St Marks in 1894 - did they continue or were they enveloped into the new company?
St Mark’s as a football club had long gone by 1894. Have a read of the article and watch the video via the link as I go through it all there. Lots of reincarnations, new clubs and turning points along the way. It’s fascinating but myths develop:

But 1880 is only the earliest known game. For various reasons I think they played before this date. 1894 is MCFC’s foundation and correct. If MUFC want to lie and say they were formed in 1878 instead of 1902 that’s their fake history.

Its a fucking lie but if they want to pretend they were formed in 1878 it’s just another 30 year barren run.

Thanks Gary - will do.

Today’s an important anniversary for our club:

A great read Gary

Exactly why it should be 1880 on the badge!!
For me, 1894 is spot on.

Manchester City were formed before Ardwick AFC had actually folded. Ardwick played two games: on 18th April 1894 Ardwick lost 2-0 to Sheffield United at Hyde Road and on 28th April 1894 they drew 0-0 away at Stockport County.

City were formed between 12th-16th April 1894, with 16th April being the ‘Birthday’ of the club.

That’s why I don’t really consider St Mark’s FC, Gorton AFC or Ardwick AFC forerunners to City. They were each a continuation of the other, while City were a new club.

Why were they playing 12 a side? Surely 11 a side had been pretty much settled on throughout football by that point?
