Alright Blues
Anyone who's travelling to the game and has any questions regarding Bucharest, where to go, what not to do, useful info like nearest metro station to the ground, english football friendly bars, the main drinking areas, which taxi's NOT to get, where to exchange money, best hotels, what to expect etc etc etc ... Please feel free to post on this thread, and I'll do my best to help you.
I'm English and I've been a Blue all my life, but have lived in Bucharest, so apart from our last trip to Timisoara (remember that) - this is the first time we've played in Romania for a few years!
Cheapest direct flights are going to be better for southern based Blues at Luton Airport (3 hours), although KLM, Air France and Lufthansa go from Manchester, but all have 1 change (approx 5 hour journey including change)
One of the safest capital cities in Europe, it will be very hot at this time of year (30c plus) and reasonably friendly people, with many speaking English very well. Take care with taxi from airport, don't get in one with anything OVER 1.69 lei on the door - expect to pay approx 30 lei into City centre (about £7)
The local lager is Ursus and Ciuc, at around 6 lei a pint (£1) but Heineken, Guinness etc available and all the usual KFC, Mcdonalds, Subway etc etc etc if you wish, or some of the local kebabs are nice too, and there's some excellent restaurants, bars in the 'old town' Lipscani (Just ask taxi driver for 'old town' or Piata Unirii (area of old town and name of metro station there too)
There isn't a metro from the airport unfortunately, but once in the city there are many metro stations signified by a blue M sign, and dead easy to use and get around, BUT the metro closes at around 11pm ... Piata Muncii is the closest metro station to the stadium, on the 'yellow line' and about a 10 min walk or 20 minute stagger :)
Don't change any money at the airport, use ATM's or banks (must provide ID if doing this) - couple of good pubs which welcome ex pats, Mojo in the 'old town' and The Dubliner which is further north in the city (you'd pass this area on way to and from airport) both are on metro routes, and most taxi drivers will know where they are.
Again it's a capital city, so traffic can be bad, but they're 2 hours ahead, so a later kick off, hence careful the metro hasn't closed by the time you leave the stadium, but again the honest taxi's are approx 40p a kilometre, so no matter where you are in the city, it shouldn't be too expensive, it's not like getting a bomber from Piccadilly to the Etihad :)
Loads more I could tell you, but probably best people ask if they need to know anything.
Cheers, and for those going, enjoy and safe trip!
