When I heard this last night, and she said you can't be white and Caribbean I knew exactly what was coming next! Fair play to Lammy - he kept his cool and straight batted every single argument back over her head for 6!

I'm slightly more optimistic in that I think another 20 years will see one generation fall off the conveyor belt of life and their attitudes go with them. Before we start patting ourselves on the back too hard though, we need to realise that what seems acceptable now will probably not be when we are in our final years and we will be the new dinosaur generation - such is life / social evolution.

We’ve seen a massive change in the last 25 years alone. Outside the stupid world of social media and these kind of talk shows on the radio, you know, in the real world, the vast majority of, I’d go as far to say ‘almost all’, people are open minded non-racist normal people.

I get about a bit (not during lockdowns, mind). I’ve worked in a number of different industries, mostly in places where there a dozens and upwards of hundreds of staff in each place, often with a big turnover off staff; I have different groups of mates n’all and have a massive family... and I’ve encountered barely any racism across all of these people over decades. And where I have it’s mostly been anti-white language from minorities.

My 63 year old parents and 55-75 yo aunties and uncles haven’t got a racist bone in them. My 85 year old Grandad uses racist terminologies, but not in a racist way, just because he’s old fashioned and looks at you like you’ve got two heads when you say “it’s called the corner shop Grandad, you’ve not been able to call it that kind of shop for thirty years”. But he doesn’t do it because he’s a racist, he just does it for the same reason I still say that I’m watching a film at the pictures, rather than a movie at the cinema that everyone seems to use these days.

My mum and dad are in their late 70s early 80s. Not a racist bone in their body. In my lifetime they have always held anti racist views. But they do regularly tell me about people they know socially are totally opposite so I totally agree with your post. Hopefully over time we will progress more enlightened. Racism has always been there it’s just been openly reignited in the last few years.

Theres millions of them with exactly the same views sadly....thats why we are retreating into ourselves as a country, Its why there are so many Tomeee Robinson and Hatie Kopins fans , its why the Union will splinter (Plaid Cymru announced that they will be platforming on independence for Wales in the forthcoming elections.... so thats Wales Scotland probably gone) Its why Brexit happened, its why people vote Tory.

There is no point going after Tommy, Katie amd whoever else. They thrive on a sense of persecution amd standing up for 'the ordinary folk'. Rather than try to catch the fish we need to poison the water they swim in. Somehow we need to come up with a counternarrative amd pop their ideological balloon. I'm not sure how, but at the moment all we do is divide into two tribes and congratulate ourselves on not being like them. This feeds their divisive tactics.
