Sterling and the hate he gets

If you look at carefully, the knee of 5 catches the back of Sterling's knee, that knocks him to the left slightly onto the oncoming defender which takes him out. It's 100% a penalty, i don't think either of the defenders meant to take him out but it is what it is.
I agree. I admit at first I thought it was soft and if given against us I'd be a bit pissed off....but.....there is contact from both sides and when you're slaloming at speed between two defenders, any clever footballer will make the most of that if there is contact. He didn't dive (IMHO) because diving implies there is no contact and that isn't the case. It's very intelligent play in several aspects, including having the guts to run at/between defenders at speed when they are completely knackered and out on their feet. Sterling's brain was well and truly switched on. Not a stonewaller I grant you, but a penalty nonetheless.

As soon as Sterling went down for the pen I knew what all of us would be reading in the media the next day.
Pen or not it was a soft pen granted but I am 100 % that no other player in the world would be
called diver for this from so many.
I think that you're far too sensitive.

Many, many players - most players? - would have gone down here as Sterling did.

For me, this wasn't a penalty - but it's not a dive. Sterling felt contact and went down - hoping for a penalty decision. He got the decision - I don't think it was a penalty - but due to some contact - it wasn't' a dive.
===
Any other player having gone down would have received similar scrutiny - this particular incident, IMO, has nothing at all to do with the player involved - Sterling - as opposed to what observers think about what transpired.

Did lineker dive for his two penalties against Cameroon? He was a hero after earning these two.

It's clearly a subjective topic, with the answer usually aligned to if you like them or not.

For me Sterling was our hero, he didnt even dive! He won us that game, stopped it going to penalties. Without him we were floundering, even Grealish. Sterling was the difference between failing yet another semi final.

But he's a villain - Mainly due to these fuckers putting cats amongst pigeons for clicks and popularity

What’s done is done. No doubt Sterling will carry this with him for some time and get beaten up by the usual suspects every time he takes a tumble. We know that, as City we have to live with the double / triple standards and comments, Sterling in particular.

Having re- watched the old Lineker footage I do think the second penalty was a now named ‘modern’ leg dangle penalty. GT is correct that jug ears was never castigated for his actions.

Lets just bask in last nights England victory but spare a moment to ask a critical question.…..From the Lineker footage it’s clear that the game today has lost the prancing, demonstrative, flamboyant referees whose exaggerated body and arm movements are simply a joy.

Someone on here once posted the brilliant footage of the Brazilian ref Clesio Moreira dos Santos. He was the master of flamboyance and was known affectionately in Brazil as ‘the daisy’ In that less PC age.

Forget the angst over the modern penalty and Sterling last night and bring back the dancing refs I say. Some of the Euro games would have been infinitely more entertaining with one of them officiating.

We are not yet an "establishment club"....its to be expected. So the swathes of fans of these clubs will expectedly be utterly biased. Its annoying for now but will be gone in a generation.

Exactly. England pundits are biased, but the Welsh and Scottish ones were fucking embarrassing. But because it's plucky Scotland or Wales, they get away with it more.

To be fair, I've not seen any actual England fans criticising Sterling, even on Twitter. Click on their name, and they're almost to a man bitter Celts.
Maybe its a case of hearing what we want to hear but honestly the English commentators are just as bad. I agree with you that last night it was nice to see people defending the players against trolls and idiots and fans of all clubs doing it. I think you are assuming that all of the other countries fans don't want you to win when its not the case. It probably isn't out of love for England but an Arsenal fan in Wales would want Saka to win for example. I agree with you about Sterling yesterday all the fan voted polls I saw had him as MOTM and plenty of praise with people saying he should get player of the tournament.

Kane was made MOTM last night. He wasn't Raz was. He had a fantastic game. There will be different points of view on the penalty decision but any player in the box, getting knocked twice, would go down. Name one that wouldn't.

Everyone in the office is waxing lyrical about Raz and asking "how come he doesn't play like this for you lot"?

It would be interesting to know whether the penalty was awarded against the number 5 or 24.
The pen was awarded to Sterling from the initial contact made by Maehle (5) as he was adjudged to have conceded the penalty.

(He was also the player that was deducted a point in the Euro Fantasy Football game from the live events)
