Seems thats the look.
I was thinking about this issue of racism, and also the Brexit marches and counter marches in London, and reading some opinion. These are my feelings on the subject...admittedly wider than just Sterling. For any mod, if this is inappropriate, please move or delete.
Genuine tolerance means allowing the expression of ideas that you hate – but arguing against them. We should avoid what Rowan Atkinson calls ‘a veneer of tolerance concealing a snakepit of unaired and unchallenged views’. Giving the authorities power to police 'hatred' should be no more acceptable than giving them the right to decide who or what we love. Some people became convinced that racism has been defeated because there are certain things that one shouldn't say in public, and also the state is so much stronger than it was, and hence overt expressions, chanting etc have disappeared, but this allows right wing views to fester and grow.
I would say do not attach to much significance to outbursts of hate but deal with political arguments. If you seek to outlaw them and censor them as a lot of people want to do then you just end up with more problems, and one day you will find yourself in trouble for your own opinion because the state views it as subversive.
On the one hand football fans want a return to the terraces. Do you remember the song ‘If you all hate /United/Scousers/Cockney Clap your hands". and we bemoan the polite neutered atmosphere at football grounds, and in the next breath we want the state to deal with the mob.
I say embrace the mob but take on their arguments. We were part of them, or our fathers were. They are not so bad. That doesn't mean have a row in the stand it means, with argument on the Internet and in social conversation in whatever forum that might be.
We used to live in a world where we had Tory, Labour, USA, and Russia and everybody had rehearsed the arguments and knew within minutes where everybody stood, now the old loyalties are gone and peoples' values are changing. Refusing to engage should not be an option. Life is a struggle, people will blame others and draw wrong conclusions but you have to address these arguments rather than just ignore them and write them off a bigots.
