Steve Daley

Only just noticed that 2 of Daley's 4 goals for City were just before we sold him.
I remember his goal v Spurs, (first victory under Bond), but didn't realize that it was one of his last games.

I met Steve Daley after going with my neighbour to watch Cardiff City v Wolves at Cardiff City Stadium a good few years ago. It was after the game and they kept the bars open in the Main Stand after full time so we went for a couple more before going home.

I was in the queue for the bar when a bloke walked past who looked vaguely familiar and was then queuing up behind me. I looked down and he had a press pass - it was Steve Daley and he was working for one of the Midlands radio stations at the time.

Anyway I got my pint, waited for him to get served, and then went up to him and said "F**king Halifax Town 1980!".

I'm a big lad and he looked more than a little startled and confused, particularly considering he was in Cardiff covering the Wolves match. It was at that point I put him at ease, explaining that I was a long time City fan and had been left traumatised as a 10 year old when my dad took me to The Shay and we lost 1-0 to Halifax.

To be fair he was great value and a proper gent. We were stood chatting away for about 20 minutes discussing his time at City and the story behind his transfer - He even got me another pint - all round top bloke.
Like you said he was on the after dinner circuit and was a great listen . Said he knew city was a big club when there was a massive fanfare , thousands turned out in their shirts and scarves , children on top of their dads shoulders waving………… and that’s when he was leaving

I remember a story he told at one. Said he was asked if he was upset that city fans threw bricks at him. Not really I kept them and built a massive house in Wilmslow. Great bloke.

I can’t remember much about it. Think it was my second away too. Everton being my first which I think was 1977 when I was 8! Third was Liverpool in the League Cup semi final and fourth was United when we drew 1-1. Think Reeves scored! He left me at the railings at the front! 4 aways over a 4 year period!
My dad was actually a red and the deal was if he took me to City games then I had to go to United games with him. That was torture! Mind you, United were shite in those days thankfully :)

I went to Bolton with my dad in 79 and he scored the winner. I was amazed as a kid that we had bought someone for more than a million pounds. He couldn’t live up to the fee and no wonder. We were a mess when Big Mal came back. Selling Barnes and Owen for less than we paid for him was insane. Not his fault obviously but a crazy period of our history.

Was at that game.

A week later they were selling badges " Ive seen Daley score " and I still have it somewhere lol.

Heard similar stories to this many times ..... he didn't set the transfer fee did he!

I was at this game with my Dad. I was probably 8 at the time. Could not believe it when sitting down that the stadium was made of wood. I think I'd only been to Maine Road before this game. Plus there was that death trap of a moat around the pitch. There was also quite a bit of fighting outside the ground after the match. Those were the days.

Was at that game myself, about 13 at the time. But my memories of burnden park and city away was 2-2 a season or so before that. It was 70's hooligans at its height and probably more city fans in the bolton end than us lot fenced / caged in behind the goals in the away end. The singing was loud as hell all the way through. At the end of the game we got kept in, police kept coming to the fences with remarks like "get back to your concrete jungles". Those where the days, the bovril was nice !
