Steven Spielberg Films

Just watching a documentary on him at the moment. He's one driven individual. But by God, he's turned out a lot of stunning films. Whatever about claims of him being the greatest director ever (which purists would probably turn their nose up at), he has to be the most successful (in terms of box office).
He's definitely the greatest director ever. His body of work is unparalleled (an argument could be made for Scorsese, but he's the only one who runs him close). Suggesting he isn't is snobbery.

I was watching Close Encounters earlier and I forgot how brilliant it is; Spielberg is renowned for his manipulation of light in films, and it's exemplary in Close Encounters.

Close Encounters is one of my top ten films. Yes, the SFX are a bit clunky compared to the modern day. But I think that's what gives it it's charm. Dreyfuss is outstanding in it. Ditto Melinda Dillon (Gillian Guiler).

My comment re the purists possibly not seeing him as the greatest is based purely on my suspicion that they'd see Ford, Hitchcock, Kubrick, Coppola etc as making more "credible", less commercial films.

If David Lean was alive, I'm sure he may have something to say about that and so do I although, I agree that Spielberg's films are usually brilliant. For me the two stand out ones are Saving Private Ryan and Schindler's List.
