Wasn't Duel one of his first?
That is a great first film for anyone.
He's definitely the greatest director ever. His body of work is unparalleled (an argument could be made for Scorsese, but he's the only one who runs him close). Suggesting he isn't is snobbery.Just watching a documentary on him at the moment. He's one driven individual. But by God, he's turned out a lot of stunning films. Whatever about claims of him being the greatest director ever (which purists would probably turn their nose up at), he has to be the most successful (in terms of box office).
Close Encounters is one of my top ten films. Yes, the SFX are a bit clunky compared to the modern day. But I think that's what gives it it's charm. Dreyfuss is outstanding in it. Ditto Melinda Dillon (Gillian Guiler). He's definitely the greatest director ever. His body of work is unparalleled (an argument could be made for Scorsese, but he's the only one who runs him close). Suggesting he isn't is snobbery.
I was watching Close Encounters earlier and I forgot how brilliant it is; Spielberg is renowned for his manipulation of light in films, and it's exemplary in Close Encounters.
I love Jaws ("I'm the chief of police, I can do what I want!"). Shaw, Scheider and Dreyfuss bounced brilliantly off each other. But if you're talking Spielberg films, Schindler's List is just so, so far ahead. Ditto Saving Private Ryan. But, of course, it's a subjective call.Jaws is still the best ever film
If David Lean was alive, I'm sure he may have something to say about that and so do I although, I agree that Spielberg's films are usually brilliant. For me the two stand out ones are Saving Private Ryan and Schindler's List. He's definitely the greatest director ever. His body of work is unparalleled (an argument could be made for Scorsese, but he's the only one who runs him close). Suggesting he isn't is snobbery.

If I mentioned all of them, it'd be a bloody long list!Jurassic Park worth a mention too. First one was great!
