Stockport

I grew up in Manchester. Whilst Merseyway is a dump, I always thought Stockport had a lot of nice suburban areas such as Cheadle Hulme, Bramhall and Marple.

Manchester is ridiculously expensive to buy (over priced for what you get). There's a lot development going on around the Bus Station and the market square has been developed nicely with a lot of new bars etc. Quite a strong alternative for young adults with only an 8 minute fast train to Picadilly. Plenty of scope to develop or knock down Merseyway to improve the town centre.

I also find traffic is a lot more chilled out in the suburb areas, no matter what time of the week it is. As soon as you drive on to a main road in Didsbury or South Manchester in general and you hit traffic regardless of what time of the week it is, feels like driving in London.

I don't live in Stockport but I work there. The main reason my company is based there is the transport links (we do work all over the UK) - it's on the main rail line to London, 10 mins from the airport, well connected to the motorway network. Business rents are also way lower than central Manchester (which would be a night mare to commute into anyway). I actually live in Warrington but can commute in taking about 1/2 hour on the M56 most days. Insert your own joke about the best thing about Stockport is how easy it is to leave...

Yes, it's not the greatest town centre going, but it's functional, they are trying to do it up (the work around the train station is quite good as is the Red Rock area) and serves its purpose. Never had any trouble there, though I don't go out in the evenings there very often.

I used to go offerton high school.

Offey estate doesn't seem to be that bad these days, but then again I go running through it and dont really spend time around.
I went past where the school used to be the other day and was ready to point out to SWMBO where I used to go to the disco where everybody did Northern Soul... It was gone, replaced by a housing estate

I went to Goyt Bank, not sure what that's called now?

I live in Stockport and am proud to do so. It’s like a lot of towns - pockets of shithole areas with their problems and pockets of nicer areas that are very middle class.

The town centre has undergone some big changes in recent years. The market square and under banks areas are lovely. Loads of nice cafes, bars and shops etc.

The Merseyway shopping centre area is a complete dump and needs ripping up. Which is a shame as it’s actually a really interesting example of modernist architecture. But like a lot of modernist architecture it’s been butchered by subsequent decades of “improvements”.
I left Stockport in '83 when I joined the RAF but my Step-Mum still lives in Heaviley.. I like the place but not sure I'd move back...

Its being redeveloped.

I went running around the site a few months ago, first time since I left the school.

One of the three buildings is for a school, another a gym and then the woodbank parts being reveloped.

Goyt Bank is the old name for Offerton High School, so technically nothing no more

Never understood the hate for Stockport, don't live there but compare it to 90% of the City of Manchester it's like Monaco (Brinny and Edgeley excepted). Great pubs in the Town Centre unlike the sterile overpriced bland ones in the city centre

I went on Stockport market last Friday great night no trouble anywhere loads of people out ,also went to new kebab house on edgeley top food 10/10,
