I live in Stoke and agree with BlueStone and simonk. Bus or taxi is best from the station and definately no colours, had a couple of run-ins wearing mine and stay in groups, Stoke fans are one step up from Neanderthals. Don't bother trying to walk it, its too far for a start.
As for pubs The Roebuck should be OK, its opposite the train station car park (turn right when you leave the station and you will see it). The Glebe (where you get the bus from as per black mamba) will be full of Stokies so take your own chances.
If you are driving, come off at J15, take the A500 and then right onto the A34, at Trentham Gardens roundabout turn left onto the Longton Road (A5035). About mile on the right is a trading estate, just past the Trentham Hotel Pub (I'll be in there, its good but, again, will be full of Stoke fans), which gives you a 15-20 min walk down Sir Stanley Matthews Way to the ground.
If the traffic is bad park up at Trentham Gardens and walk up the Longton Road (adds 10-15 mins to your walk)
There is also a Harvester type pub near the ground and car parking at the ground is "a nightmare".
