Stoke post match

No chance mate. Shawcross is trying to attack the space and Sterling is facing the opposite way to the ball and blocking his path into that area. Sterlings whole purpose is to block his run its completely indefensible.
Wtf he didnt block anything though cause shawcross was running to the byline not across the box

An earlier poster asked what tune City fans were singing for Guardiola -
I could not hear it on TV but Radio Manc. (Fred Eyre) said it was to the Dave Clarke 5 tune -'Glad all over.'.....which Palace fans sing.

Corners are indefensible now if that's a pen.

They are not. You just cannot face your opponent, make no attempt to defend the ball (as your not looking) and push the attacking player who is trying to make a run in anticipation of where they expect the ball to arrive.

After the four goals and three points at a ground where we rarely get three ponts, the best thing was that we out-ran our opponents by quite some distance. Our pressing was a joy at times and caused them lots of problems but it could still be more cohesive and intense and at this stage that is a source of encouragement and optimism.

Sky should, imo, have given us a bit more credit but don't think is worth quite the level of angst being displayed here. Far more important is that the team are working hard to implement what Pep's wants and, if they continue to do that, that augurs well for the season.

We allowed them very few sniffs at goal and created plenty of good situations at the other end. We need to be more clinical and that is not a new problem but building confidence will help that and staying mean defensivley will take pressure of the forwards.

Stones continues to look tailor made although I'm not sure he was MotM but can't decide who was.

Sterling's renaissance remains ongoing; just needs to work on eliminating those heavy touches but his work rate was impressive.

Silva has settled into new formation better than KDB but the latter made most key passes and had a superb assist.

We can sit back and enjoy the weekend.

It's only our 2nd PL game and matchday 2 isn't yet complete... but what the hell?!

We're top of the league!
We're top of the league!
We're MANCHESTER CITY!
We're top of the league!
Nah, dippers will score 6 in the second half. It's their year.

Wow 4-1! Great result. Before the match I was aiming for 2-1 given that we didn't have the best record away at Stoke and the weather isn't best suited to our possession game.

First half immense, second half we dropped off a bit. We pressed and defended well but once we won the ball back, we gave it away too quickly, especially in the final third. Maybe that is due to the attacking movement becoming more static? Got much better after the subs though. But overall it's a very enjoyable performance. Stones (my MOTM) and Otamendi great and some of their passes quite instrumental in our best attacking build-ups. Dinho as dependable as usual and Kolarov seems to be turning into another Mr. Reliable as well. Who would have thought that? ;) Silva controlled the game in a deeper role and is getting better and better at it. Nice to see him clearing a corner too:) KDB is still adapting to the new role but the passing and movement was at times sublime. Lovely freekick for our second goal. Kun is truly a goal machine. Nolito and Kelechi superb as well.

Ref seemed to have a mare after the first penalty though. Very inconsistent. I would probably accept him giving the penalty to Stoke in the first half, but I can't understand why having contact with someone for a corner was considered a foul. It's not as if Sterling deliberately pulled the other player down. And that kick on Silva was atrocious. Literally fuming when no card is given.

Sterling wasn't blocking his path. After the initial 'push' on Sterling, the trajectory of the ball is over Shawcross' head, away from where he was attacking. I said previously the reason he must have given it was because Sterling isn't looking at the ball. If they're going to give those, Juve will give away 10 pens a game...yeah course they will. I assume they're playing these rules in Italy?

Comparing the two penalties is ridiculous, which is basically what the commentators were trying to do.

Anyway, the only thing we're missing is a bit of composure. Some of the players are still a bit panicky when the balls comes to them with the opponents pressing. Get Gundogan in there and we'll be flying.

I agree 100% with this.

Well done City, I can't believe we've gone to Stoke and put 4 past them.

Bizzare- Sky are taking the 'lucky win' route but BBC sport are describing it as 'dominant', 'impressive' and 'a thumping'. Completely split.

Love Nolito already. Stones MoTM. De Bruyne still look very off the pace, Navas wasn't good enough, Sterling is improving at a scary rate. Iheanacho is the perfect impact sub.

At the 70 minute mark Pep has two choices- Fernando, who will sit back and help us see out 2-1, or Nolito who will help us attack and put the game beyond doubt. He took the risk and went for the latter and we deservedly top the league because of it.

Kolarov, Otamendi and Stones are making itdifficult for Clichy and Kompany (when he gets back) to find a place in the team. Onto Steaua and hopefully another thumping.

Watched it on Sky at someone's house. I never normally watch games on Sky. That Quinn fella doesn't like us too much. cant believe we outran Stoke at their gaff! Good match, magnificent result, some cracking performances. Silva looks to be getting back to his imperious best, Sterling is fucking brilliant.....what a difference a coach can make.

However.......weren't we this good in the first 5 games last season?

Completely agree about the pressing and our running stats. Probably the highlight for me, after last year, seeing us out run a team.

What I found really interesting was for about 15 minutes in the second half we got really ragged and you could see it was a direct consequence of the players intensity dropping and players on the ball not having the one or two options Pep insists on.

It just shows the importance of having a structure to the team. Hopefully Pep will use this and say to the players this is what happens when we dont play in a structured way.

Great result after a really tough week. The more resulta like this the more it reinforces the philosophy with the players. Great performances, again, from the likes of Kolorov and Sterling who got a bit of criticism last year.

That is weird that you would go on there, I agree.
Always nice after a game to have a look and see them start with "really think stoke will do them here" etc and end up with "stoke are shit anyway"

What is weird is united fans in agreement it wasn't a pen but you thinking the opposite as the loan voice of agreement it was.

I apologise to pudge for saying he was alone.

Forgot about you. Silly of me really.
