Stop it.

After May 2012, who could take any game we play in for granted? I'll admit that I've been caught out a couple of times this season myself — once, to some extent, against Arsenal in the Emirates match, and again, big time, against Sunderland recently — I have to keep kicking myself and reminding myself of who we are, of our stupendous ability to Fuck Things Up. I don't even like to think about 'what if no Aguero in the 93rd minute', it's like looking down into a bottomless abyss, I can't properly do it. Nobody — nobody — is taking Everton for granted. Least of all the eleven men who are going to be out there. Of that you may be sure.

After more than 40 years of being kicked in the proverbial bollocks every time we seemed to be heading in the right direction, including, but not limited to:

1. Beating the rags 5-1, only to find our manager sacked within a few weeks, as we were dangerous close to the bottom of the table.

2. Bringing in a decent manager in Howard Kendall, who had us challenging at the right end of the table for once, only for Mr Kendall to piss off back to Miseryside less than 12 months after he was appointed.

3. Winning the last Maine Road derby convincingly, only to lose to a distinctly average Charlton the following week.

4. Bringing in Frank Clark and see him steady the ship, only to endure a set of terrible results the following season that led to our eventual relegation the the third tier of English football for the first - and only - time in our history.

I think most City fans know better than to start getting all giddy with three games to go, especially given what happened two years ago.

We know it's in our own hands.

But we also know this is Manchester City we are talking about.
