Many people overestimate their own tolerance for people of different races and cultural backgrounds. Many people think they enjoy diversity, but when they walk on the street and hear passersby speaking a foreign language they don't understand, they start to feel angry. That's why I don't think immigration is a good idea. Locals feel uncomfortable, and immigrants themselves also feel uncomfortable.

That's why I don't think immigration is a good idea. Locals feel uncomfortable, and immigrants themselves also feel uncomfortable.

I mean… I’m English but I’m often speaking a different language in the street given my wife is Portuguese and I decided to learn it to communicate with her family.

What language you happen to be talking at any one point in time often has no bearing on where you’re from and I’d wager that most people in this country speaking another language are doing it for convenience or for other’s benefit but could also speak English if needed. Many will be English.

So no, it doesn’t bother me at all.

Also worth adding to this. I think you’re from China? I don’t know what the dialectical diversity is there so can’t comment. But here we have more than four “native” languages within the UK alone. Sure, Welsh is becoming less common, and even more so the other Celtic languages - but there’s plenty of anecdotes of English tourists going to Wales or Ireland and telling people there to “speak English” when they are speaking Welsh or Gaelic. Not to mention French is basically a first language for our Royal family.

Europe in general is extremely linguistically diverse so we have absolutely always had a mix of languages here. Mostly Latin and Germanic, but going all the way back to 1066, we’ve never had one single language as a nation. With this context it’s an embarrassing thing to get upset about as it’s something that has objectively always been the case since the birth of the nation.

More realistically, let's relocate the UK nearer Africa so we're the first safe place they come to.
