Storm Isha

Why do people play storms down just because it hasnt hit their area, weird and such a waste of a post
But what about people who play down people who play storms down? Surely that is also a waste of one’s post and indeed, time?

Its all relative obviously, but years 1987, 89, 90, 92, 93, 98, 05, 07, 11, 12, 16, 17, 20, 21 and 2022 all had storms with stronger recorded wind speeds than Isha.

Several other years in that period recorded storms as bad as Isha.
All of which will be at a similar level of wind though.

Seems weird that calling storms names, (mostly for ease for meteorologists to describe the same storm) has made people want to downplay how dangerous these events can be.

No all those years had storms with generally stronger winds. Only my rough estimate but last night's winds were probably a 1 in 3-6 year event?

In those years listed, two years 1987 and 1990 stand out with exceptional windspeeds and both of these caused much more widespread damage than last night.

So 100mph isn’t similar to 90mph?

Both at levels that risk lives.

How about the rest of my post? How come storms need to be downplayed now?
Well if you are going to categorise storms with wind speeds of 10mph or less all together, you can safely say that there have probably been about 25 to 30 storms the past 35 years of similar windspeed to last night. So it's even more common than some people are making out.

As for downplaying, I was merely trying to put some context to the reporting. I personally find it overly dramatic. Having said that, I have no problem with the Met Office issuing warnings, so people can take adequate measures and protection where necessary. Ie dont drive a high sided vehicle, don't drive a motorbike. Secure and check temporary things like scaffolding and marquees.
