A storm = wind over 55mph or 10 on the Beaufort Scale.Well if you are going to categorise storms with wind speeds of 10mph or less all together, you can safely say that there have probably been about 25 to 30 storms the past 35 years of similar windspeed to last night. So it's even more common than some people are making out.
As for downplaying, I was merely trying to put some context to the reporting. I personally find it overly dramatic. Having said that, I have no problem with the Met Office issuing warnings, so people can take adequate measures and protection where necessary. Ie dont drive a high sided vehicle, don't drive a motorbike. Secure and check temporary things like scaffolding and marquees.
90mph Winds carry a significant risk to life.
