Strange Pub Names

Not an odd name but there are only two pubs in the village of Newhey in Rochdale. One is the "Bird in the hand", the other is "the Bird in hand". Both look the same as well.

Saw one this week called "The Pub".

In my opinion old pub names should never change.

Used to be one in Hampshire near Petersfield i'd been to a few times. It was called 'no name'

And near the ground, 'The spanking roger'

Did my training at HMS Mercury so went there a couple of times

So did i!!! Proper country pub that was with a ruck of guest ales always on. Funny thing is i could only ever find my way there in the dark...failed miserably in daylight hours.

Anyone mentioned the 'Dutch Birds' in Failsworth yet?

I always imagine it as some kind of pot smoking whore-house

*Makes mental note not to just walk past next time*

Ashton?
Went in there a few times a good 10 or so year ago, in the latter years of the Red Lion.

Used to go passed the Soldier Dick on my way to Edale. Like the "3 stags head" just past sparrowpit. It's not a pub as such, but like somebodies gaff! weird.

Shut down now is the Soldier.

Top Bird and Bottom Bird.

When I was doing abit of pub work I sometimes used to research as to how and why some pubs got their names, most of it is simple and tedious but there are some cracking stories behind the naming of some pubs.
