The standard of life we enjoy today has been hard fought for and unions have been at the front of that fight. Do you think that employers have given us rights and conditions we now have out of the goodness of their hearts.

Those that work through a strike are the lowest of the low.

No matter what, we should never cross a picket line? Really?

After 3 years without a payrise, an ongoing dispute over the removal of terms and conditions including the withdrawal of overtime rates, shift allowances and bank holidays (although we get extra holidays to replace them), the union at our place has decided on a strike on Wednesday.
My dilemma is that me and the missus are proper brassic at the moment. I want to strike and believe in what the fight is about but on the other hand, don't want to leave us short of money more than we already are.
As the day approaches, I don't know what the fuck to do.

You go to work and feed your family. If you had 5 grand in the bank then you can be all high moral and mighty, right now your family comes first. Bank holidays etc are no more either way.
Agreed. Principles will not feed your kids.

Nor will next weeks wages when they've been slashed. Your kids will hardly see you because you have to work overtime at a reduced rate to feed them. Think it through people, think it through.
You stand together, together you fight your corner.

For the OP:

If the union your want to undermine voted FOR a contract with improvements, but you disagreed with the decision to vote FOR and voted NO, would your principles require you to NOT take the benefits and pay increase, or would you take it and agree that the democratic vote of everyone was the best way forward?

OR, is it just ALL about you and you are too selfish to support your fellow workers in their time of need because YOU are simply unable to stand shoulder to shoulder with them....even with their assistance?!

As a union member, we recently had a 99% YES Strike Authorization Vote. The effect? brought the company to the table to negotiate more seriously, because they KNEW we were willing to withdraw our services. Without the THREAT of collective action, and the willingness to follow through when required is the ONLY THING that keeps your pay and benefits where they are.

Maybe it would be cheaper to hire someone younger, someone cheaper, someone who takes less sick leave, someone ELSE? What then? Oh yes, the UNION CONTRACT will save you!

Maybe you would like a return to the workhouses? No paid holidays? No paid sick leave? No weekends off? Maybe you think you could negotiate a better deal for yourself on your own?

Oh wait, I have already read how strong your constitution is, so you're not going to negotiate ANYTHING worthwhile for yourself!!
I find your intermittent use of capitals to be strangely arousing.

Far easier than underlining for emphasis!

No, sorry. I'm trying but it's just not working for me. It must be something about CB's intermittency that does it for me.

No,the dole would feed the kids if someone lost their job through redundancy.
That's why we have a welfare state.

If the company is cutting costs this much then it is likely to close the plant anyway.

Re: Strike Action - Wednesday

We could start a Bluemoon union, we could then go on strike when one of our members as been banned, anyone caught posting while on strike get labelled a Rag.

So ultimately the union has a no lose position because if they don't get what the want they strike until the company folds and if they do get what they want the company may well fold anyway. Leaving everyone else to fund the welfare of it's now unemployed members. Clever folk those unions.
