Last week I had the pleasure of meeting a man who tried to saw his head off with a bow saw. Made a nasty mess of his neck, but had the angles all wrong for a fatal cut.
Paracetemol od is the most common cause of suicide, but is often done as a gesture that goes wrong. NEVER take an od of paracetemol then wake up and think you are fine. Go to A&E. People often present the evening after the night before or even later and then it's often too late.
Carbon monoxide poisoning is said to painless, but it has a high succcess rate, so who really knows?
A lot of people who kill themselves are acting rationally, but it's not an act that there are many self help books on, so it's not surprising that they often screw it up. I often hear people who have failed at suicide say that they didn't do something really catastrophic, like jump off a tower block, because they didn't want to risk hurting anybody else or upsetting them by making a horrible mess. Plus, and this is surprising, most suicidal people don't want to die suddenly. They want to go out slowly with time to ponder their final hours.
My advice to anybody contemplating suicide is : don't. Whatever method you use, you will look a mess afterwards and people will hate you even more.
However, if you insist I would suggest going somewhere very cold, like the arctic, or maybe your chest freezer and drinking a bottle of brandy. When you feel sleepy, curl up and bye, bye. The wonders of alcohol and hypothermia should never be underestimated.
