Sunderland (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

Very disappointing that we couldn’t find the breakthrough against a team as limited as Sunderland. For all their effort, we really should have had more than enough to get the win today.

Too many players playing within themselves unfortunately, taking the easy option and passing it backwards rather than trying to influence the game. Foden in particular was guilty of that today.

Haaland was very poor and hopefully Semenyo can be effective through the middle as a false nine so that we don’t have to play Haaland every game.

The big positive tonight though was how good Rodri was and how much better he looked relative to anything we’ve seen post-injury. He really showed us what we’ve been missing and doubtless he’s got much more to come as he recovers his fitness.

wanted to win this especially after how Arse ripped apart Villa earlier.

but we were just not good enough today. shooting poor, losing duels all game, slow to second balls, again not enough midfield control, Bernardo as a right winger is such a nonsense thing, pushing up Gvardiol is a better tactical move than Bernardo up on right.

react with a win vs poor Brighton or we could have bigger issues. we were on a great run until today, January is very busy and lot of games with Carabao, FA, CL games and PL games vs Chelsea, rags etc. zero rotation for Haaland might hit back.

Can only remember playing well in a first half away from home at Fulham for the last few months.

We’re wasting far too much of games doing nothing, leaving us far too little of games to pull it out of the bag and today it bit us on the arse.

Hard place to go. Disappointing not to get the result we really needed to keep the pressure on arse, but we'll have worse results over the next few months.

Should have won the game - if we had got the lead it would have been a different story.

Best news was watching the difference Rodri makes to us - if he remains fit we will win things. That is no slight on Nico it's just Rodri is a Rolls Royce of a player. All about smooth transition and not delaying passes. Doku did well when he came on and the difference to attacking from Savinho is night and day. Created some great late chances in a match where they put so much effort into.

Good that we didn't lose and we showed a lot of character when they were getting the crowd onto the ref.

Can understand why another wide goal scoring player is on the agenda - we can't rely on Erling scoring all season and when he has a quiet patch others should step up. This is my big problem with a wide player that scores 1 goal every 45 appearances.

Good point, played well 2nd half.
Clean sheet away at a difficult place.

Ake did great considering he’s hardly played, Gvardiol and Doku played well too.
Ake looks like he's running in treacle.. He's really slowed down.. Shame as he's been great for us..
We created a few chances but nothing like clinical enough tonight.
Erling was anonymous but he didn't get any service either apart from the one he normally scores from.
Great to see Rod back.. Need to beat the chavs on Sunday.. Play the fucking kids against Exeter and rest the players who look fucking knackered.
Arsenal will drop points too.. It's definitely not over by a long chalk.
