Sunderland (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

Fair play to Sunderland i say. Despite several players missing they got stuck in with resolute defending and were willing to attack us. I was impressed how fit and determined they were, credit to their manager and coaching staff.

I have a soft spot for Sunderland FC, and supporters are sound.

Disappointed we couldn't win but a point isn't a bad result. On to Chelsea game for our next win i think.
If they want to play rough so be it. At least Pep should have used Khusanov rather than the lightweight that is Nunes.

A good point in isolation but the four defeats weve had means we need to play catch up so big 2 points dropped for me. More than likely we will be 7 behind Arsenal come the Chelsea game so there is really no room for error from here on in. I think we will need to win 15 of the remaining 19 with a few draws thrown in.

We re halfway through the season. We started badly, but still in second place. With Rodri fit and hopefully others stay fit, I am feeling far more confident than this time last year.

That said, I saw the game against Bury which all-but condemned us to the third tier.

Hope the guy that needed medical attention at the back of the top tier last night made a full recovery, paramedics moved in swiftly, took an age to get him down the ridiculously steep steps!

Seem to remember similar comments about “Plodri” in his first season

He will come good that i'm pretty confident of, would just be nice if it happened a bit quicker, its no good running round smiling like a cheshire chat if you are having your pockets picked before you can get a shot off/make a pass over and over again.

Not to digress as this is a football board, I'm not here and never have ventured to bore anyone with my practice- however I will not be called out by some two bit "I wiki-ed Zen for a minute" fraud.

Zen doesn't work, Zen simply is. Zen does not step in to solve problems, it doesn't take credit for wins or make excuses for losses- it simply is. Zen isn't given, taken or received or lost.

It is there in absence of everything , it is there in the presence of nothing.

Zen doesn't understand, doesn't misunderstand. It is not some magic rubric for devining. Facts are irrelevant, after the fact is exactly the same as before the fact.

Those who ascribe some value or worth to Zen have absolutely zero understanding. That said, Zen is not to be understood- Zen simply is.

Once the purportedly wisest man claimed to understand Zen and as such stopped searching. He was never as alone or lost than at that moment.

Zen cannot be quantified or qualified. It will not be questioned as it is has no answer and is no question.

Zen simply is awareness of the absolute present moment and knowledge that the only thing that exists is that one inherently and infinitely fleeting present moment and then to simply accept this reality without judgment, qualification, sanction or exception.

Bottom line, any charlatan who raises the question "are you Zen" by definition will and can never truly "know" Zen.
Hmmmm. Although I cannot put my finger on why I actually enjoyed reading that.

Give over - Nunes did his job, don't try and hang that result on him. Seriously what would Khusanov have added - like him as he's a proper defender, he's adding nowt going in the opposite direction which is what we lacked
We were generally poor first half and didn't get a grip of things until Rodders appeared - that may have been down to Sunderland starting to tire mind.
I don't think Sunderland were particularly rough either - they were physically stronger and direct

All I know was Nunes was pussying about at the back. He'll never make a defender. As for Sunderland, they're just dragging football back into the dark ages.

I thought we were a shade unlucky not to win. Bernado a fraction offside and savinho had two great chances as did gvaridol.

They defended for their lives and full credit to them for that. It matters not how many players are at afcon etc they are still a decent premier league team and have a deep squad and spent a fair amount.

It’s hard to get through a low block no matter what team you face.

Some of the players did look a bit jaded and a bit of rotation would be nice.

It’s a good point and we can’t win every game.

Onwards and upwards I say. Still think Arsenal will have a little wobble at some point. We just need to keep on their tails and I think we will be ok. Long way to go yet.
Our xG was 2.25, our biggest for a game in which we failed to score since March 2022. Arsenal’s “fantastic statement” HOME victory over Villa was 3.13 for FOUR goals. So, you could argue we were more than a shade unlucky, it was once every four seasons game.

We were awful 1st half but much improved 2nd half, main issues I noticed.

O Reilly very ineffective just staying back, or pinned back, maybe due to the players Sunderland left high up, but still not brave enough imo. Gvardiol pushed way higher when he came on.

Nico G for all his physicality does not distribute the ball or bring the tempo at the Rodri level. Now I know nobody can, but they each played about the same minutes in that game, but Rodri made nearly 50% more passes. And that's our way, more passes makes us better. Rodri also pings the ball over the top way more, but Nico G maybe doesnt trust himself for that.

Haaland was bad all game, and with him and Savinho missing sitters, we should have had a goal in each half just from them.

Doku was a big upgrade on Savinho.

Honestly, I think if Doku and Rodri started, we win that game, we generated over 2xG and should have won regardless, but that's how football goes sometimes.

I disagree imo Nunes is one of best full backs in the league. The big problem was both central defenders were slow. Kusanov would have been better handling the long balls.

Sunderland were excellent in giving us no time on the ball. Really poor performance by Haaland.

Sometimes you need some luck and in this game it was missing
