Yes, read this years ago. I think the actually getting over the line bit earned you nothing originally, in terms of points. It just gave you a chance to try for a goal. Which was the only method of actually scoring points.

I think in the early days of American football, they did have to actually touch the ball on the ground, hence the name of that.

I remember reading years ago that American Football has actually stayed the closest to how the original Football from the 1850’s was played
