Sven as our manager.

Sven was Bobby Manc's mentor, and I should think more than one or two words of advice have been interchanged in the past 18 months. Sven was an accomplished tactician, also, and a I remember the Micah / Dunney partnership being particularly strong. What surprise then, that Bobby Manc has turned City into one of the very best organised teams on the planet? (OK, he's got access to some slightly better players, particularly in the middle of the field...)

Sven's City were much, much tamer going forward, though. It sometimes completely didnt work, and he never did persuade Dunney to stop hoofing the ball long at every opportunity. Elano, Petrov and co, were boys that Sven must have known about for ages - when he went looking for a Premier League job, he just made sure the club he signed to could give him £50m or so to go and get his shopping done - those boys were fated to wind up together, if not neccesarily at City. Credit to him for getting them to (mostly) work in a very short timescale.

Better than Hughes, not as good as Mancini.

Played some great football at the start of the season. Tailed off and from around Jan/Feb onwards, we showed real relegation form. Remember him fondly and was a bit gutted when he was sacked.

OP, tell your mate to check out the Ian Cheeseman interview with Sven earlier this year. Google Ian Cheeseman interviews 2011 & you'll find a link to the BBC Manchester website.

Good honest interview, I was pi**ed off with him after England, but the man repaired his reputation with a decent spell at City. I've got more respect for him after listening to that interview as well.

Sven, nice guy, easy to like when involved with your own club. There was an era where he was at the top of his game, unfortunately that era has passed and his vast list of contacts are now somewhat outdated. Without purposely being rude to Leicester, there is a reason since leaving us that he has been linked with, and taken the standard of positions that he has. Money is always a driving factor for him as was the case initially with ourselves. If you have any then he may well be a good appointment at your current level, who knows.

Sven created the illusion of a really good team (not unlike his managerial abilities). He brought in exciting players like Petrov and Elano. We were thrilling at times to watch in the first half of that season. And, the double of United was worth his pay packet alone.

However, after Christmas it fell to pieces. There was little strategy, no attempt to change game plans mid-match, and a general apathy from the players. Despite his sacking by Shinanwatra (my god, how long ago does he seem now?) being written on the toilet wall months in advance, it does not explain the side's collapse in the last two months. And 8-1 to Middlesbrough was very hard to swallow.

I liked Sven. I liked the way we played under him. But like his managerial career, there was no real substance to the team. The players we got excited about then pale in comparison to the players that we have now.

Fond memories, but sentimental ones. Mancini is the real deal, and can handle the pressure at this level. In the same way Joe Royle could handle the pressure in the lower leagues.

By the way: we have just signed the most sought after striker in world football. Has this sunk in with everyone yet?

He was a very good manager for us, and should have been kept instead of Hughes, as we probably would have done better the following season. He played a part in helping Richards develop, and it was probably during his time that Dunne was at his best as well. Also, he helped get some strong performances out of Johnson and, if not for Johnson's injuries, he would have built on that and would have been a top player. Also lets not forget he was the one who started to give Hart regular games as well, and, unlike Johnson, Hart has clearly built on that. Sven could easily have gone for Isaksson or Schmeichel, but he chose Hart and that was the right choice.

Made some clever signings, mainly Elano and Corluka, Elano providing the creativity and a spark which had so so lacked during the previous couple of seasons, Petrov as well was a decent buy, provided us with width and a strong threat down the left. Fernandes wasn't too bad either. At home, we became a force to be reckoned with again, as shown by winning 9 straight games and not losing until Arsenal at in February.

Would also be unfair not to mention our double over United, the first game, the Geovanni goal was probably the only time we seriously threatened Van Der Sar, so to win like that while not playing fluent attacking football was very impressive, we really did grind that one out. The second game at Old Trafford, he was absolutely tactically spot on, having Hamann in front of the back four, who was excellent that day, we steadily grew into the game and began to attack United more and more, getting the rewards we deserved and taking our chances. The way we were set up, it was going to be very difficult for United to come back, Sven had it absolutely right that day.

The only problem was, I'd say Sven was a victim of his own success because after the great first few months, we should never have finished as low as 9th, although I think a lot of us would have happily taken that at the start of the season. We got sussed out by other teams, Elano gradually became less effective, and as for the defence, well towards the end of the season that just got worse and worse. Our impressive home record slipped away, losing games we should have been winning and Sven couldn't conjure up a suitable Plan B, he didn't stop things from falling away and really he should have. The Fulham game was probably the standout bad game for me, the biggest evidence of how Sven had lost his way, I won't say the 8-1 because of the circumstances.

Wasn't helped by having Thaksin as his chairman, probably could have done with someone like Wardle with a much wider experience of football, maybe then things would have been slightly different. Generally, he used Thaksin's money quite well.

But, if he was still in charge now, I don't think we would be where we are now. He was not the man to take us to this level, he could possibly have got us into Europe (well, he sort of did through Fair Play) but he was not the right man to take us into the Champions League. If he had been here at the time of the ADUG takeover, I doubt he'd have lasted much longer than Hughes did, maybe even less.

I reckon with Leicester, if he gets them promoted, which I think he will, he will be able to establish them as a Premiership side, get them competitng for a place in the top half.

Good manager but needs a strong number 2 as he is too soft with the players..

Plus 8-1 at boro is more than embarrasing !

One of my favourite seasons as a City fan.

Brought in some class players for cheap (in today's market!) and like previous posters have said, we played some good stuff. Trouble was our owner was clueless and apparently went mad at Sven after we lost at Arsenal (our first loss, 5th or 6th game of the season) and Sven and the players basically knew from Xmas onwards that he was a goner.

Ultimate professional and very likeable manager. If we didn't have Thaksin in charge and someone who just left it to the manager, he'd probably still be in charge. He had average/slightly above average players playing top quality football, (Ball, Vassell, Onuoha, Fernandes, Etuhu) and made Michael Johnson look like the next Colin Bell. Not once did an individual complain to the media about not playing or whatever.

My only gripe with Sven was he brought in 3 or 4 shit players for quite large amounts of money. (Benjani, Castillo, Caicedo, Bianchi) who all really failed to make an impact apart from one significant derby day goal. Some of his signings may flop but most will no doubt impress.

The only thing i disagree with is "quite large amounts of money" and that Caicedo is a shit player. He´s not and weren't shit while playing for us either. He was 19-20 when he arrived and scored 5 goals in hes second season with us. Cant really demand a miracle from such a young kid. Played less matches than Balotelli who scored 6 and you wouldn't call him shit, or? Of course Balotelli is better, but still. Sold this summer for 9 million, so he did have potential.

Correct me if im wrong, this is what i remember.
Castillo - loan, 3 million loan-fee, paid by the player himself (right?)
Benjani - didnt we end up paying something about 4.5 million and only put up 1,5 at first (the rest depended on matches and such things).
Bianchi - horribly buy, scouted from Youtube and videos. Stupid buy.
