Swales Out!

Did I mention I'd been on Eggheads?
Was just thinking (no idea why) about the number of times I and many other Blues made the ritual walk from the Kippax and round to the front of the Maine Stand to protest against Chairman Swales.

For many Blues of that era, it became a right of passage, and there was the old joke that young blues fans actually thought his name was Peter Swales-Out.

And that's what prompted this thread. Fans under the age of 25 will never have demonstrated against the club (with the exception of the polite demo aimed at keeping Sven as manager) and I can't really see a time when hundreds / thousands are outside the West Stand demanding Mansour's head!

In a way, I feel they are missing out on something (though certainly not missing out on trophies, like we did under Swales!!)

The best demo was after the Friday game against Coventry and Brian 'who' Horton had been announced as manager. The police horses tried to move fans along, who simply lay on the ground in front of the Main Stand and the police couldn't do a thing!

Anyone else got a Swales Out story?

Re: SWALES OUT!!!!

I'm 26 and I remember the Swales out protest, just the back end though obviously, and the Franny out protests.
who remembers the time when it was rumoured Richard Branson was rumoured to be interested and fans were singing one richard branson outside the main entracne?

Re: SWALES OUT!!!!

I shouted this on more than one occasion and with hindsight and looking back we should have ousted him a lot earlier than we did.

I will point out that it wasn't personal, i kind of liked Peter Swales. He was a City fan through and through he was just totally out of his depth running a club our size and would have been better off at Altrincham, which is where his business started and building them up into a lower league club.

Our demise started in a way with his appointement,i think it was 1973.He said,''If we haven't won a trophy in 3-5 years i will resign.'' Well we scraped it,we won the league cup in 1976 and came runner up to Liverpool in 1977.The rest apart from the 1981 centenary cup final we lost to the media darling Spurs, was pants.

The documentary they shot during those times was disturbing and showed just what a joke club we had become.

Mainly dark horrible depressing times to be a blue, though we look back at them with blue tinted spectacles now, in truth it was dismal.

When he was appointed chairman of the FA as well the chant changed to,''You've ruined City and England!''

R.I.P Peter and i hope you are enjoying what is happening now.

Re: SWALES OUT!!!!

just read Paul Lake book on holiday.PJS doesnt come over too good unfortunately in it.Should never have been anywhere near our club.

Re: SWALES OUT!!!!

A very messy but necessary process of removing him from power. It has took nearly twenty years to get us sorted and looking like a successful club.

I think that was the crux of it. He wasn't just going to lose being Chairman of City, but the FA job carried a lot of kudos not to mention jollies and freebies!

Re: SWALES OUT!!!!

Used to go to Gigg to watch Bury quite a lot when City weren't playing. Years after Swales was booted out as our Chairman Bury had a player called Chris Swailes. At one match the PA announced the sub as Chris Swailes, there was a slight pause, and then a lone voice at the back of the stand "Out!". Clearly I wasn't the only blue there!

I remember when I was quite young the whole of the kippax turning their backs to the pitch during play for quite some time! I have no recollection of why, even though I joined in! Can anyone enlighten me?

I remember Leicester away in the 80's. Lost four nil and the Swales out banner appeared

All of us going mad

Buying a forward with Franny t-shirt, didn't work out to well with Franny but believe good intentions were there.

I think the crowd outside after going down against Luton was at least as big as that Friday night 'Horton' game.

Also remember a very young Steve Lomas outside and trying to get past the Police and barriers to get in the ground. Police thought he was just another fan trying to get past them until me and several others told them he was a youth team player and so they let him in.

he did great off the pitch though, new badge as the old one was owned by swales mate so we made no money off any shirt sales etc, he set up new stadium deal, my brother is head groundsman and he said club was in a mess on pitch but improving off it(circa 97) and once relegation was secured (haha) bernstein really streamlined the place,13 years later we know the results.

does anyone actualy remember when the swales out slogan first appeared,my first recollection of it was after a very depressing one nil defeat at home to notts county in feb 83 when a few windows in the main stand got smashed and the police horses charged us.people seemed to start realising at that point that the slippery slope was leading to relegation, and all swale,s promises and bull was starting to implode.i don,t remember anything happening prior to this .

I'm 25, don't remember the Swales era although I do remember the Franny Lee era, Why you old timers wanted him in I'll never know!! Having ex players back as managers/coaches yeah but not as owners, they lead with (in our case) blue tinted glasses. Idiots the lot of you!! ;)

As previously posted, the demo outside the Main Stand after Luton '83 was as big as any. I was only a young teenager at the time, but the car I went to the game in parked right outside the main entrance so I was right in the thick of it. It made me feel like a right hard man iirc.

I have read Paul Lake's autobiography and it confirmed my view that Peter Swales was a disgaceful person whose only positive influence to this world was his service to the world of comedy. What a clown we had running our club. It always makes me smile when certain posters hark back to the good old days of City being a caring club when we were ran by this charlatan and imposter.

Remember being outside the Main Stand calling for the Board. It may have been that Friday night Coventry game but I've got Southampton in my mind.
Anyway we were calling for the Board and the chant was 'Put your Whisky down and face the lads!'
Great chant! Anyone else remember this?
