Swansea City (A) | EFL Cup | Post Match Thread

How very true. I was at Wembley for the final against Wolves, 1974. We lost. I was again at Wembley for the FA Cup final, Spurs, 1981. We lost. For various reasons, I was not at any other final. I would have bitten your bloody hand off for even a League Cup final appearance in the dark Swales/Lee years. Finally, in 2018, I saw us win at Wembley against Arsenal. It was incredibly moving to me. I had finally seen my blues win at Wembley.
This competition will never have the gravitas of the F.A. Cup to me, because I'm old school (and we won our first European trophy thanks to winning that cup). But it is absolutely not to be sneered at. To me, it is worth a hundred Community Shield trophies, and yes, this will be controversial, but it's worth more than the European Super Cup, which left me pretty thoroughly unmoved. Just my personal perspective.
Furthermore, it's a terrific way of keeping players on their toes in the early part of the season, rotating and giving younger players a chance to stake their claim, and generally creating a feelgood factor if you're getting through the rounds. Several times, we've won that trophy in the spring, and kicked on partly thanks to the momentum it creates.
Will it be “enough” if we win only that and nothing else, and fail to get top four? That's another question. But I hate the idea of “binning off” one of England's two domestic cups. I think it's disrespectful, and entitled.
So — I get the firm impression — does Pep. And the players.
1974 was my first final / Wembley trip. The only visits to Wembley by City that I missed since then were a couple due to Covid restrictions, so that includes one League Cup final.

All the League Cup Final wins I have seen have been very enjoyable. I love winning it but I wouldn’t be bothered if the tournament was ended as there are too many competitions for top English sides. I am also not overly bothered if we play the kids and go out of the competition early (albeit I hate City losing any game) but when we get a home QF draw, I very much want to see us go all the way.

I think this would be a very good season for us to win this competition again. If most of our players are fit, we should be able to win it without harming progress in other competitions although I wouldn’t make us favourites at this point.

I’d much rather win this than the European Super Cup.

Would it be absurd to compare the combination of Cherki and Marmoush for the 2nd goal at Swansea to David Silva and Kun Aguero?

A year has gone by since the demise of our 4 back to back title-winning side that was heralded by defeat at Bournemouth and 4 successive PL defeats. It would be nice if a year later we were to return with players who remind us our another recent side.

The rest of the Premier League is little more than a tribute act to Pulis's Stoke, not so Manchester City.

Best team throughout the game, great goal by Swansea.

Only frustration is players not just shooting, its pass, pass pass. Which i know is also hard against a team having all 11 players around its box (inc GK)

Felt it was Gvardiol who had the first out of box effort, and he come on mid 2nd half.

Pitch looked awful on the tv, like it been allowed to grow longer with no cutting.

The commentary team on Sky + for the game, I only wish i could have found a different stream

Disagree about Arsenal.

Arsenal are almost never, ever, ever giving up goals - watch their matches.

And in spite of numerous injuries - the Arsenal machine marches on.

If you somehow think that Arsenal aren't going to win the league by a huge margin - then you've obviously not watched their games.
They are bottlers
They don’t know how to win the league
Machine ? Nah !

Dear me! Have you not been watching City for long? I think Marmoush had a goal pretty much every other game before he was injured.
There you go…you have reinforced my point.

He splits opinion, I cant argue his stats are decent, and when he connects with a ball, boy does he connect!

The issue is, this then muddies the fact he can't control a ball, pass a ball, tackle, and is softer than candy floss.

Remember the debate is not is he good or bad, more is he good enough for us to be where we want to be?

I think unequivocally the answer is no.

Give your head a wobble ?
An untested and patched-up 11 with some players who have just come back from injuries, We won the game on a tricky night with their fans right up for it backing players, Marmoush did ok, Doku keeps getting kicked all over the park without protection from the referee.

We earn the right to be in the next round what more do you want ?
An untested XI? Over a 500 appearances in the players used??

I guess my disappointment lies in not particularly the result, or what one or more individuals were doing.

It's the realisation that few
Of that XI are of the level required to get us back to being serial trophy winners.

Cherki stood out in terms of real quality, the rest, I don't know, it just feels I'm watching average/good players. Not very good/great players/generational players.

Maybe you have just accepted it quicker than me, I will get there I'm
Sure.

Serial trophy winners also lost games in cups and in the league, Judge them at the end of the season

We did our best to try and lose this game especially in the first half, but somehow got through.
The new set piece coach has done sod all, our corners are woeful, we're the only team in the Premier League who hasn't scored from set piece this season.

Winning this trophy is meaningless - there's zero prestige. It's like winning the FA Community Shield. Who cares?

The majority of fans care. It's now a long established trophy which started in 1960, that's 65 years ago. For 58 years the final has been played at Wembley. There are only three domestic trophies up for grabs and that's one of them. We have a good history in it and for 35 years it was the last trophy we won. It's also the first trophy you can win in a season and if you do it can give the team momentum for a final.push if we're in competition for the other trophies. I've no idea when the snobbery around this competition started but it's bollocks. Probably when the rags and dippers were winning the title every year. The way their seasons are going I'm sure they'd take it this year, although in the dippers case they can't. Also there are no guarantees anybody is going to win one of the so called bigger trophies so if you have the chance to win the league cup you grab it.

Spot on mate. I think when you reach a point where you refer to one of the top 3 domestic cups as meaningless, it’s time to take a long, hard look at yourself in a mirror. (Unless you are a City ‘fan’ since 2012).

Exactly this

Quite a lot of us do care. Those of us who have been watching City before 2008 will recall that it was the often the League Cup that provided the best hope of silverware.

That sort of arrogance is more in line with supporters of our more entitled opponents.

The rags can't either ;)

Aside from the shock of the Swansea goal actually hitting the net (I was behind the goal and convinced that it was going wide) we were reasonably in control and the only fear was that without Extra Time we might be heading for penalties.

However the real bonus for me was that Marmoush and Cherki were both full of desire and wanted to score goals.

I'd also mention the number of hardcore familiar faces at Swansea last night
If you don't think the Carabao Cup is worth the effort then kindly fuck off to another thread and leave us to focus on how we can beat Brentford in the next round
