Typical we sign a magnificent young player who some of the top clubs are after and it descents into an argument over English football.. I want us to see us produce English talent as well, but not at the risk at missing out on quality players like Faour or others.

If they came out of the academy that makes them City players to me and I would rather have an international City player than an unloyal English player like Rooney any day of the week.

How do you know he is quality?

153 goals in 82 games for the Malmo U18 team for a 15 year old seems to suggest the lad can knock a football about.

Jeremy Helan was as highly rated.

I don't think that should put us off signing a foreign player because all our highly rated prospects haven't worked out. We have a few local lads like George Evans (born in Cheadle) coming through the Academy so not as if its only foreigners in the youth ranks.

Not at all, Pozo and Lopes and examples of that but you pay for potential, no one knows if they are going to be great in 2-3 years.

I'm sure Barcelona are glad they didn't have a Spanish-only policy at the academy and left Messi in Argentina. If a great youngster is available, we should be in for them. If the English lads are good enough, they'll get in the team.

As for English youth, the problem lies with far more than any individual club. Here's the problem.

Three years ago an official report concluded that coaching is the "golden thread" leading to international success, but new Uefa data shows that there are only 2,769 English coaches holding Uefa's B, A and Pro badges, its top qualifications. Spain has produced 23,995, Italy 29,420, Germany 34,970 and France 17,588.

So by the time they reach 14, a lot of youngsters have already had the technique drilled out of them by coaches who'd rather play the big lad up front and get a result, than actually develop players' talent and technique. And unsurprisingly, when the "big lad" reaches the professional game, he suddenly realises that he can't bully 30 year-old men in the same way he could fellow 16 year-olds and doesn't make it. Meanwhile the kid who had promising technique and vision has been judged "too small" to make it as a professional footballer and has already moved on to something else.

We've been bringing in promising foreign young players for years, but how many of them have we actually improved? I don't want to slag off the coaching in the academy because i have absolutely zero experience of it (the problem seems more likely to be a lack of first team experience anyway), but the clubs these guys are coming from must be doing something right to get them to that stage in the first place. There's no point spending millions on 16 year olds if we can't improve them when they get here.

Or perhaps we just haven't been scouting very well.
