Shaun Wright-Phillips will always be a legend to me due to the simple fact that he was good enough to command a £21 million fee when we were close to liquidation back in 2005. He really did not want to go but was persuaded by his gobshite dad and also told by the city hierachy at the time that we 'really' needed the money.
For the first two years of his return he was every bit as influential in taking us to the next level as the likes of Bellamy, Adebayor & Robinho as he chipped in with 15 goals and easily the same amount of assists. I admit the last year of his stay was frustrating and painful as Mancini's signings bedded in and surpassed him, and I think that has tarnished some people's memory of him.
We must always remember where we have come from and never forget the influencial players we had before the money came in. If we do not do this we will end up like the vast majority of ignorant, arrogant rags in the future with the next generation of City fans believing football began when we started winning trophies. SWP = LEGEND!
Absolutely BRILLIANT post, mate. So well put.
As a Yank, actually watching City in live action was something I missed out on until the mid-to-late part of the last decade. As I began to actually get to see City matches live, I fell in love with Shaunny just in time for him to get dealt to Chelsea. I was pretty pissed off at the time, but I was happy to see him back in the shirt when it happened.
Remember so clearly him coming on against Chelsea 2 seasons ago late in the season and bombing down that Wright side in the latter stages. I think he even set Bellars up for our last goal that day. I felt so happy for him then, making plays against the side that had taken him away from us.
Yes, his Dad acted a twat a lot, but I refuse to hold that against Sweep, who always put in an honest shift and ran his balls off for the shirt. Still, I don't know that I would class him as a City LEGEND. A city FOLK HERO - maybe - for those of us long timers who will, in the coming years, wax poetically about the "bad old days" when we lost to those we should have beaten and beat those we should have lost to.
I wonder how he felt on that magical day in May as we surged past QPR and into the
BLUE sky. I'm sure it was bittersweet for him, but I hope that in his heart he felt some pride. Do any of you remember him having any comments post-match? Here in the USA, coverage after the match ended was brief. If the club would release the Season Review DVD in NTSC format, I bet I could finally see it all. That'd be AWESOME.
Good on ya, Shaunny Wright Phillips. We'll remember you always!
