Sycamore Gap tree felled | Man in his 60s also arrested

Its the youtube tiktok social media generation where any attention is good attention as long as it gets attention, its pathetic but its the way of the world now, look at that logan paul twat films dead bodies in a forest known for suicide, absolute scumbag move but it got him notoriety and then he makes a fake apology says he'll learn from it and goes onto make millions just because of notoriety, thats literally all these kids want these days, its a sad old world

There was littering in the countryside long before social media fella, though I don't disagree with your representation of its users per-se

I go hiking a lot and I’m a member of the BMC.

The visitors to our national parks has exploded since covid - and while it’s no bad thing that more people are enjoying being outdoors there’s been a big increase in a certain “type” of person.

Idiots who are ill equipped and end up having to be rescued through stupidity and idiots who drop litter. By no means is this ALL new outdoors enthusiasts but there are a lot of them and you can spot them from a mile off.

I was half way up Ruddy Ghyll heading to Great End a couple of months ago - in high winds and battering rain. Anyone who knows that route will know how sketchy it is in those conditions.

Two fuckwits in t shirts and trainers coming down having turned around half way up asked me for directions to “the exit”.

The mind fucking boggles and it makes me really angry as mountain rescue teams are all volunteers to give up their spare time to help people in need and if they hadn’t bumped into me they’d have become another avoidable statistic.

Surprise surprise the Facebook mouth breathers are now littering the site of the Sycamore with painted rocks, no doubt further tacky, social media driven tributes will follow.

These painted rocks and other twee shit such as putting Christmas decorations on trees, or creating dioramas out of miniature action figures and dolls out in wild locations (as well as the usual littering) are what make me despise all the people who've newly discovered the British countryside via Facebook and Instatwat.

Yes there was litter previously, but nothing like on the same scale that's occurred in the last 4 years or so with the huge increase in visitor numbers to more wild and remote areas of the countryside, all fuelled by a combination of lock down travel restrictions and a rise in Social Media platforms promoting these previously quiet and unspoilt places to the mouth breathers and simpletons who live their lives according to what Facebook and Instatwat tell them to do.

My assertion is the large majority of these people who have newly discovered the great outdoors in recent years courtesy of social media don't actually have any love, respect or appreciation for the places they visit despite @Saddleworth2 wrongly suggesting that isn't the case.
This is a thread about a specific location not the entirety of the great outdoors. That location has been popular with walkers for decades if not centuries.

It may well have been relatively popular for decades if not centuries, but with people who respect, value and appreciate the countryside.

Just like all other countryside locations it will have become hugely more popular in the last few years thanks to Facebook and Instatwat... and the large majority of those new social media driven visitors will have no respect, love or appreciation for the places they feel compelled to visit just so they can take the obligatory selfie before leaving their litter and bags of dogshit behind.

Have been there twice in the last two years and guess what….

no litter, no dog shit, (plenty sheep shit though) I didn’t enquire as to mouth or nose breathing as everyone seemed to be enjoying the beautiful and peaceful scenery and the unbelievable Roman constructions around Housesteads.

As a fisherman I spend quite a bit of time in the countryside and yes there has been an uptick in folk enjoying it since Covid. Some don’t know how to behave, many do. Your generalisation is exaggerated and pretty offensive though. I wonder what has made you so cynical and angry.

still so fucking angry about this today. In a forest a tree blends in with other trees - like its camouflaging itself - but this tree stood alone for 3 centuries tall and proud and in an unforgiving environment. It probably owes its very existence to that V shaped valley that it filled so magnificently and yet one moronic act demonstrated its vulnerability and it acts as a metaphor for what is happening to nature around the country and indeed around the world.
