so your logic says that I should be able to buy the chemicals that make any thing (or drug) and that shouldn't attract any attention......however thats not quite the case is it?

BTW we've been selling them this stuff since 2007 ....go here

<a class="postlink" href="http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2013/09/08/sarin-uk-firms-_n_3890574.html?ir=UK" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2013/09 ... html?ir=UK</a>

s'much as I don't want to fall out with fellow blues ....you need to take your blinkers off m8

No my logic is that while no sanctions are in place the sale of legitimate goods used in may industrial processes should not be restricted unless there is reason to do so. Companies should apply for licenses to export and where the DofT sees fit it should issue licenses. When political circumstances change the DofT should review it's policy and withhold licenses for goods which it believes may be used for purposes other than those stated.

In this case, goods which before the current crisis would probably not be restricted were incorrectly licensed but the license was revoked when the error was realised. No one was knowingly supplying chemicals to make Nerve agent. There is no legal framework to do that.

You need to stop inventing reasons to distrust the government you elected.

You appear so bias
No he is simply entirely correct.

He is correct,i worked for 1 0f only 2? companies in the UK that export huge quanties of raw chemicals to what some would call volatile areas of the World.
Many of the chemicals are used to manufacture products to prevent diseases spreading.
Many are diluted down or have other chemicals added that change the identity of the raw materials for this use.
Security is off the fuckin scale for this stuff,BUT and its a big BUT unless you stop entirely the UK exporting all chemicals that could possibly be used for reasons other than what they are made for how do you stop it??
Tighten up?you can ALWAYS DO MORE but full control is in my opinion impossible, sorry

the majority of countries have signed up to the Chemical weapons Convention which prohibits the manufacture, stockpiling and Use of chemical weapons

Key points are

Prohibition of production and use of chemical weapons
Destruction (or monitored conversion to other functions) of chemical weapons production facilities
Destruction of all chemical weapons (including chemical weapons abandoned outside the state parties territory)
Assistance between State Parties and the OPCW in the case of use of chemical weapons
An OPCW inspection regime for the production of chemicals which might be converted to chemical weapons
International cooperation in the peaceful use of chemistry in relevant areas

However (guess who) haven't signed up.......Syria, Egypt, North Korea, Angola, and South Sudan. So simple logic would tell me that until these countries do sign up we don't sell them any chemicals whatsoever......unless I am being naive. (I'll bet my bottom dollar that we are not selling to North Korea on this basis)

Unless of course...we all have to bow to the mighty god of profit again

Syria crisis: Guide to armed and political opposition

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-24403003

What a humanitarian disaster, my heart goes out to all the minorities, the innocents christians, muslims and other civilians being massacred.

Sudan aside I can't remember a war where civilians are actively targeted to such a high level, this seems to be such a huge human catastrophe.

Being a Christian or minority in the Middle East is not a good place to be right now!

two masked gunmen riding on motorbikes fired indiscriminately at people emerging from a wedding service at the Church of the Virgin Mary

Looks like humanitarian crisis and persecution of Christians is all the rage and if I was living in Israel I would be very worried about what the future holds.

If Egypt and Syria fall to the hands of Islamic extremists hell bent on murder of the Kafir
do you think the next Islamic aggression will occur on the Israeli front or lead to the King of Jordan being overthrown?

What reaction would then come from Israel followed by America?

We would see Scenes much larger than The Yom Kippur War of 1973

I'll never understand why people want to murder others over religion, but one thing is for sure this problem isn't being resolved fast enough for the Syrians and the Christians in Egypt. As always the people who pay the largest price are the innocent civilians.

The Syrian war seems to be stooping to unseen lows with snipers 'targeting unborn babies'
for target practice.

If ever there was an image of war which would disgust anyone it would be the image of the most vulnerable in society; the unborn being targeted

A report from a top surgeon talked of the horrendous situation in Syrian hospitals and how he was always treating civilian casualties and very rarely it was soldiers involved in the fighting.

I just think that anyone killing anyone is doing something unjustified.

Whatever sick twisted individual kills for fun is thinking is beyond my comprehension.

Is the answer always to kill the killers?

I don't have an answer and if I did someone more qualified than me would put it forward and implement it.

I must say, what a great move by William Hague not to get involved. A few months a go, many in the UK were calling for action to bring down the Assad regime. Now as evil as his regime is, the opposition are just as bad if not worse! All you have to do is look at live leaks to see the atrocities being carried out by the FSA. It would appear extremists have quickly taken advantage of the situation.

I genuinely feel for the innocent civilians in this conflict, but at the same time glad we didn't back any side in this. The Middle East is still in the dark ages!

British surgeon Dr Abbas Khan, imprisoned in Syria for over a year, has died in detention, family tells BBC

<a class="postlink" href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-25414779" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-25414779</a>

FFS! What a barbaric hellhole.

This man went out to treat wounded civilians. He was captured by Syrian Army and was tortured. After being tortured he was made to beat up other prisoners. This man was there to help for christ sake! The sad thing is the FSA are no better.

Just thought it was worth pointing out, with all the concern about civilian casualties in Gaza, that the death toll in Syria is now estimated to be over a quarter of a million. That's an average of around 200 every day for the last three and a half years, mostly civilians. I'm not saying this to trivialise the Gaza situation but rather to put it in context with what else is happening in that part of the world.

700 killed in 2 days fighting last week which is the the highest seen for quite some time. Wonder why it hardly made the news.

The syrian jihadists have made the news a lot.

Israels 2 yearly slaughter will fade out soon unless the pro Palestinian protesters make their mark in Europe.....in which case it will be harder to bury.

There was a time period when it was all that was on the news, so, why the change? Basically the powers that be have realised they ballsed up and come around to my view and the view of the Syrians which is, actually, Assad remaining in power is the lesser of all possible (likely) evils, so we'll shut the fuck up about him now. Even Saudi Arabia seems to be coming around to the view that they've opened Pandora's box in arming every Sunni militant in the region and has now started talking to Iran. Hate to say I told you so...
