Taxing the super rich

Nope, we just know they occupy a space in the market, there's zero guarantee in a world without Starbucks someone else wouldn't occupy that space.
But that's what I've been arguing. If someone else occupies that space, then the argument about how much VAT and income tax they contribute disappears, because whoever occupies the space will also pay these taxes. If Starbucks disappeared and everyone suddenly took the money they normally spent there and put it in a savings account, then it would be accurate to say that they must have increased spending when they were around, and that we are now missing out on that juicy VAT and income tax.

I believe she owes a debt to the system that allows her that earning power. Since that system is underfunded, I believe she should pay more.

Reminds me of JBP commenting on the rich and he suggests that in a biblical sense (not religious) being rich is fine, but as your wealth increases, so does your responsibility to your society.

In this respect, perhaps tax is a forced way of doing this, although i would much prefer it to be voluntary.

Well. Greece perhaps. Italy certainly since joining the euro. But a rising tide really should float all ships, that is the hope at least.
They're doing alright compared to before they joined tbf, you have to take the financial crash and migrant crisis into account. Fiscal policy would help there though.

That's what I'm saying mate, we can only guess at the impact.

James Connolly.
Those who can afford to pay should, those who can't should not.

Greece? Yes probably overall, though I guess the unknowable is how they would have done otherwise. Unknowable and I don't pretend to guess. As for Italy, the euro has been a disaster for them, hence the unrest there. But things can change. They can always change.

And you're right about the financial crisis, it's also why some nations have shown rapid growth - it follows disastrous falls that tend to be more quickly recovered.

Agreed. Ireland 5 years ago was a basket case, today it's the 6th (I think?) Wealthiest country in the world. Overall nobody in the EU is doing badly compared to before they joined though.

Are you forgeting the €67 Bilion (Capital B) worth of debt we have as a result of the last crash (itself caused by the EU)?

€67Billion/8million = €9000 for every breathing entity in the country!

It's been a disaster for Southern Italy (fiscal again), Lombardy upwards is flying.
Statistical rule, great rises follow great falls.

No, no more than that. It's not just the basic economics regionally which may or may not be blamed on something like the euro, it's the state of Italy's overall finances. Every country has its depressed areas of course.

I know mate!!! Do you know what's even worse? That debt would be around the 250bn mark by the time we paid it off at normal rates, but the ECB sorted us out.
And wait until you hear this?!!!! We're the sixth wealthiest country in the world now thanks to those dirty EU bastards, we were all the way up in the high seventies on that list before we joined.
