Teacher Training

Blame the people in charge of the money for being too cheap to pay them to come in during their holiday. I'm sure most teachers wouldn't really care about a couple of days off their holiday if they were getting paid for it.

So after 6 weeks worth of holidays they decide to have another 2 days (monday/tuesday) off for Teacher Traning

On top of the Teacher Strikes, holidays in October & Christmas my work leave are nearly gone.

Now this is not a pop a Teachers - far from it. I was just wondering why after approx 30 working days off the powers that be need another 2 days for training?

Would it not make sence to do the training during the 6 weeks holiday and have 28 days off?
As a working parent the 2 extra days saved would have come in handy (like a City european trip)

Is anyone a Teacher or know the reason why?
Teachers are basically on 10 month contracts, paid over 12 months.

They still work over the summers, planning lessons etc, but if they were ill, they don’t need a sick note as they’re not technically employed for those 2 months.

Therefore, the training needs to be bolted on to term time, hence the need for inset days before the term starts.

There’s plan, or call them the 6 week 2 day holidays and think of it as teachers going back early :)
To be honest, even after 4 weeks off i would be crawling the walls at home bored sh1tless never mind 6 weeks.

I would be sitting at my desk today in the classroom in silence thinking “this is the calm before the storm”

Also ask the other Teachers if they want a big game of Manhunt (for morale purposes obviously)

17 years a teacher. Never, ever had the full holidays. Always schemes of work to get ready, modify. Always had folders to prepare and log in details to prepare. I was Head of ICT. Team to prepare for the new term. Later in the term there was marking to be done and grades to prepare. I could go on but suffice to say I used to dream of having a complete holiday without going in. All students had to be graded every half term and a written report every term.

Stand up in front of students for few days and you will see why we need holidays.

This is a myth actually (even though it's not technically defined - they have a complex system of 'direct time' and 'undirected time'). It was tested in court when a local authority tried to dock 1/260th of teachers' pay for a strike arguing that they were only paid for weekdays, so only weekdays should count. They lost and the court rules that they should be docked 1/365th of their pay. If it was really only 10 months, then it'd be, well I can't do the maths, but you get the idea.

But also effectively you're right. Their level of pay reflects the fact that they get long holidays. You could reduce them to 6 weeks, but they'd rightly expect salaries to increase accordingly.

It's also quite revealing that when this sort of thing is suggested or moaned about, it's never on the grounds that it's better for their kids' education, it's on the grounds that they see the school as a free babysitter for their kids while they're at work. And don't get me wrong, I know it's annoying as fuck to have to change everything when the schools are closed, but do you genuinely think it would benefit your child's education for them to have 6 weeks holidays instead of 13?
