If you are good with computer save your money and get a windows/Ubuntu

If you arent get a mac- work really well and you dont have to think:
If you were good with computers you'd be able to take a decent spec'd laptop and make it a hackintosh anyway.

If only I had some IT knowledge!!

I don't really like macs any more than laptops aesthetically so that's not the issue. I've never got a virus on my current laptop of a few years and I'm not sure that's a major issue for me.

Can anyone suggest a lightweight high quality laptop for under £850. After the student discount I'm not sure the mac is that much more expensive.

£389 fella.

Try to buy this elsewhere though, you could get it cheaper without an OS installed, and install it yourself.
But even at £389 it's reasonable

My mac is about 4 years old and still works exactly like it did when I first got it.

Wouldn't think twice about getting another when this one finally breaks

Had other laptops before (spent about 400 on each) and they have gone turd after just over a year.

However, that was a while back now though, so they have probably improved

Bought a fair few 'top' laptops and none have been anywhere near as good as my MacBook, I love it and wouldn't hesitate to get another MacBook or Pro when this one finally starts to go wrong which shouldn't be for a long time.

Defiantly get a Mac mate, you won't look back

You could buy a £200,000 Ferrari bud... if you don't check the engine oil your car will sound shit and eventually fuck up.

I've had £99 pc's running windows 95 run quicker than some guy's top of the range laptops.

Very true.

The controlled environment does make it easier with Macs though. Limited hardware and centralised control do make it easier to provide a standard of user experience which is higher than most OEMs out there, especially the ones that just love to install bloatware. I think startup program buildup is a big problem, as is the registry problem. Unix and Linux don't suffer as much of a performance drop after six months or do. Me and thee will most likely say you should do maintenance but 1. A lot of people are ignorant and this is fine. People should know to run an up to date firewall and anti-virus like they should know to check their oil and not put diesel in a petrol car but I don't expect people know to look through running processes and start-up programs and know which ones can be safely killed off and which can't for example. 2. Unix and Linux do make these problems less burdensome.

Macs are the industry standard for a reason.

I run Abelton 8 with a stack of software on a 3 year old, stock Macbook.

Anyone who says go with PC, hasn't owned a Mac.

Just go and bloody buy one.
