Tell me to get/not get a Mac

Get a Macbook mate. I record music and my mac is fat better than my laptop. My friend is a producer and he only uses macs(well he cheats he has OS X , windows 7 and linux all on his imac)

If you are recording/making music get a macbook mate trust me you will never look back its worth the extra money

I don't really like macs any more than laptops aesthetically so that's not the issue. I've never got a virus on my current laptop of a few years and I'm not sure that's a major issue for me.

Can anyone suggest a lightweight high quality laptop for under £850. After the student discount I'm not sure the mac is that much more expensive.

My samsung cost £350.

500gb hard drive
dual core processor
3gb of ram

It flies ...

I ended up buying a Macbook Pro in January after lusting after one fro three years.

It's nice, but i'm not sure its worth the extra money. I wanted something i'd enjoy using as i use it most days, it ticks that box, but still, if i had to buy again, i'd probably but this again (because i'm a nob) but for people who aren't and want value for money, i don't think you get it from this.

I think you're the first person on the thread to be at all dissatisfied with a Mac whilst owning one.

What's this Ubuntu stuff?

Mac's get viruses http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-13453497

You are paying for style over substance, you could get a very very powerful lappy for under half the cost of a similar macbook.
If you want any music app for win then pm me :)

I have had both and came to the conclusion that i dont need to show of in starbucks so i sold the macbook and bought a decent pc with change to spare for a crate of some kick ass german beer.

Ubuntu is a linux distro thats been made easier to use for users thinking of changing from win to linux as it gives u a nice shiny gui rather than all command line.
I'd get debian as a starter linux os though.

fwiw a 2yr old pc is almost worthless whilst a Mac still has a good resale value.check out ebay for proof of that.

Ubuntu is a distro of GNU/Linux - the other of the major desktop operating systems. It has a lot of the benefits of OS X - better security, faster, less bloat, less maintenance etc. but you don't have to pay. It's completely free and it will install on pretty much anything. There's a whole philosophy behind GNU/Linux, it's about freedom for the user and community. It's the embodiment of the original hacker ethic of the personal computer revolution. Downsides are, like OS X, it won't run Windows software.

I couldn't recommend GNU/Linux to you for music production because I know absolutely nothing about music production. Anyone help this bloke? Could a distro of GNU/Linux work for him? Is there a suite good enough to compete?

-- Mon May 30, 2011 11:10 pm --

Good point. You can seriously exploit idiotic Apple fanboys. A fool and his money are easily parted and Apple fanboys are some of the biggest idiots around. I know someone who upgraded his Mac every year taking about a £200 hit in depreciation every year. Very clever and cost-effective.

FWIW, every component in a 2 year old PC can be easily upgraded at reasonable cost.

You can do that with a Mac though too can't you?

I'm not dissatisfied, i enjoy using it, and i said i think given the choice i'd still buy it again.

But i don't see how it's worth the extra money, if we're talking purely value for money it's got an "Apple tax" on it which most 'fans' of the brand are more than happy to pay without giving it a second thought.

Just doing some latop research. It seems you can get a laptop with the same spec as a macbook for £500. That's half the price. Anyone with a mac want to tell me why it's worth twice as much as a laptop? Will it last twice as long?
