if you are going camping for more than a night I would stick the tent and bags in the hold, by the time you got even a small two man tent, and two sleeping bags into carry on luggage you would have no room for anything else (like clothes), add to that they might not even allow the pegs on board..

Seriously, this is good advice. The last thing you want is to get to the check-in desk and end up in a ruck. Sack the idea off mate, stick it in the hold.
