Deaths In Anti-Terror Raid In Belgium: Reports

Three people have died in an anti-terror raid in eastern Belgium, according to reports.

Federal prosecutors were quoted as saying there had been a police operation near the centre of Verviers.

The Belga news agency said there were several casualties and police activity was continuing.

Explosions and gunfire were apparently heard near the station, according to Belgium's public broadcaster RTBF

"An operation is under way," a source in the mayor's office told AFP without giving further details.

Another official said separately it was "jihadist-related".

Earlier, Belgian authorities arrested a man suspected of supplying the gunmen who killed 17 people in Paris, as funerals for the victims of the attacks continued.

Police in Charleroi are holding the man on suspicion of arms dealing after he handed himself in to police in the city on Tuesday.

He told officers he had been in touch with Amedy Coulibaly, the militant who took hostages in a Jewish supermarket in the French capital and was later killed by security forces.

According to reports, the man said he had conned Coulibaly in a car sale.

But police later found evidence the pair were negotiating the sale of bullets for a 7.62mm caliber firearm - the type needed for the Tokarev pistol Coulibaly used in his attack on the supermarket in Paris that left four hostages dead.

Suspected Jihadists Killed In Belgium Raid

e-mail

At least two people have died and one person has been arrested following an anti-terror raid in eastern Belgium.

Police carried out the operation as they believed the group was about to launch terrorist attacks "on a grand scale", according to prosecutors.

They said suspects opened fire on police before being killed in the raid in the town of Verviers and no officers were hurt.

Explosions and gunfire were apparently heard near the train station, according to Belgium's public broadcaster RTBF.

There were reports that a third person had been injured in the raid.

Video posted online of what appeared to be the operation showed a dark view of a building amid blasts, gunshots and sirens, and a fire with smoke billowing up.

RTBF said police had raided an apartment above a bakery.

And the website of La Meuse newspaper quoted an unidentified police officer as saying: "We've averted a Belgian Charlie Hebdo."

The French satirical magazine was attacked last week by brothers Said and Cherif Kouachi who killed 12 people.

A source in the Verviers mayor's office told AFP: "An operation is under way" without giving further details, while another official said separately it was "jihadist-related".

The incident reportedly took place near a street called Rue des Ecoles.

One resident in Verviers told RTL: "I heard the first explosion and then several shots. I cannot say more at this time. I dare not go down to take a look."

The operation was one one of several being conducted against people believed to have returned to Belgium after taking part in the Syrian civil war.

It has the highest number of citizens per head of population in Europe who have fought for the Syrian rebels, research says.

Police raids were under way in the capital Brussels, according to RTBF.

And Belga said police were hunting a man who witnesses said had brandished a weapon and shouted religious slogans in Arabic at a Brussels metro station.

They were about to launch a Paris copycat terrorist attack probably a police station in Brussels

Good job to the Belgian security force for intercepting them before they could carry out an atrocity.

2 dead and 1 taken alive. Good haul. No police injured.

In Belgium they are reporting this is a European coordinated effort to bust terrorist cells in 7 European countries. Hope we have played our part since we have accommodated fucktwats like Abu Hamza for years before deportation.
