Eto'o can make us winners
Stuart Brennan

JULY 02, 2009

MARK Hughes believes Samuel Eto’o is the man to fire City to the next level.

The Blues are keen to conclude a £25m swoop for the Barcelona hitman but are having to play a waiting game as the deal has hit a snag.

Eto’o’s agent is locked in a tense battle to extract a ‘loyalty’ bonus from Barcelona for the player before he will open meaningful talks with City.

But City boss Hughes made no bones about the fact that he feels Eto’o would be the right man at the right time for the club.

He said: “He is a world star and European Cup winner, the type that scores you 23 goals a season.

“With those type of players you know exactly what you will get – quality, a winner’s mentality and someone who will get people out of their seats. That’s the thinking behind the bid to bring him to City.

“We feel we are not a million miles away from having the tools to do the job we are being asked to do and, obviously, if we can bring a player of the quality of Eto’o to the club it will help our cause and we will try our best to do that.”

City have admitted that they are helpless to affect the outcome of Eto’o’s wrangle with Barca.

And they confirmed that talks have begun with Carlos Tevez’s representatives in a bid to bring the Argentine ace to Eastlands now that his temporary deal with United has expired.

Excited

Hughes asked excited fans to show some patience, pointing out that not all deals are as quick and uncomplicated as that which brought Gareth Barry to the club from Aston Villa.

"It’s difficult to say what the time scale will be for every transfer you get involved in," he said.

"Some are concluded quickly and are pretty straightforward, others have so many elements to them that it’s very difficult to tick all the boxes in a period of time, so people can get frustrated.

"The key from my point of view is that we are in the mix for top players, and wheels are in motion. We are trying to conclude deals very quickly in the window and if we can do that, it will be marvellous.”

DARIUS Vassell was met by chaotic scenes when he travelled to the Turkish capital Ankara to hold talks with local side Ankaragucu.

The City striker, who has been told he can leave the club, was met by 3,000 fans at the airport and had an escort of 50 buses and 250 cars to his hotel.

Vassell is one of six senior players released by the club when their contracts expired yesterday, the others being Danny Mills, Danny Sturridge, Glauber Berti, Dietmar Hamann and Michael Ball.

From the youth ranks the Blues have released goalkeeper Richard Martin, Matthew Brown, Ian Daly, Gregor Hartley, Ben Morris, Curtis Obeng, Chris Ramsey and Angelos Tsiaklis.

What do you think about City's summer transfers? Have your say

Every top player wants to ensure they are in the shop window at the world cup next June. According to some agents I know not playing in Europe could actually benefit City in going for top signings as it means fewer games for those players and therefore less risk of injury or being plain worn out . The top signings would simply insert a one year get out clause in their contracts if City didnt qualify for Champions leauge next season. Think about it, it makes sense.

Bill,

You might not class all my musical tastes as good but then even I don't but I know what I like..

The Rising was good, enjoyed the title track on Sunday, but I prefer the last two. BITU was what really turned me into a fan although I have always loved the track Born to Run. Must admit though that Darkness did catch my attention when it first appeared and is one of my personal favourites in the Springsteen cannon. 'Racing in the Street' was one of those frisson moments on Sunday.

Seeing Bruce in Asbury Park must have been very good. I've been to AP during a business trip and did see Van Halen in NJ last year and their first appearance at Madison Square Garden in 1981, which was an amazing gig. The best Queen show I ever saw (and I've seen every tour since '75) was in '77 (or '76) at Stafford Bingley Hall, which was the concert that inspired them to write 'We Are The Champions' after the very noisy crowd sang 'You'll Never Walk Alone' to them louder than the Kippax.

I seems our mutual good taste isn't restricted to footy. Like Dennis D I've been a fan of Bruce since the 70's. IMO though The Rising was his finest album since BITUSA, and in some ways better than that in view of it's relation to post-Twin Towers. My favourite of all time though has always been 'Darkness'. Very little between any of them, though. They're all great.

Take a big deep breath and breathe easy, these two players are intrinsic transfers,it's not like just going out and signing Gareth Barry and RSC who were not playing in the chimps league. And also Eto'o and Tevez unique in the fact that one is obviously surplus to requirements at Barca and quiet rightly is a little upset by this, the other being Tevez has never been signed by a premier league club and we would be the first, also the agent who owns his rights will want the best deal for Tevez and clearly for himself if you get my drift.

I'm pretty confident Tevez will happen,Eto'o if he wants to come based on what his agent has said then fine, but if it's just for the money then i hope City walk away.

Its great mate, even more so when if your player wants to leave you make a bucket load of cash for it! Saying that, Citey dont need to sell, you are super rich, just look at your mega bucks signings!!!!

BBC website 0937 BST: Discussions between Chelsea and Inter Milan over a possible switch to Italy for defender Ricardo Carvalho and midfielder Deco have collapsed. The Blues value the pair at £12m while the Nerazzurri are unwilling to go beyond £6m.

Carvalho would be a great signing, class player

OB1 I am glad that you enjoyed it, I couldn't make it this time but have seen him many times and love his stuff from the 70's Greetings, The Wild, Born to Run and Darkness......i even did a trip to East Coast NJ and caught him in the Stone Pony Asbury Park.........my favourite closely followed by Queen circa 1980.........

Seem the website has crashed on launch today, too many fans have accessed it via a Metrosite link???....which was a demo for city website fans....

A poster called Spursmad has predicted all City signings in advance correctly so far and he feels Tev and Eto will come..........here's hoping...........

At the end of the day, picture the scene of Carlos and Mrs Tevez on the sofa -

Carlos "I`m not sure if I should sign for Chelsea or City love"

Mrs T "Well, if you think I`m moving down to London and moving the kids out of school, you`ve got another think coming Carlito!"

What would you do? CTID

Not as easy as pro evo soccer on the old xbox is it sparky? Big players want big clubs and big trophies simple as! Even "mediocre" players are millionaire in today’s football so money doesn’t come first to everyone!

Correction is required to my first post as it does'nt read properly. My travel was an internal flight from Abu Dhabi to Dubai. MH and JL boarded the Emirates flight in Dubai. Minor detail corrected.

I think the new MCFC site isnt ready because they want all city fans to pre-order their new shirts and lots will if Tevez and Eto are coming.

dennis d,

I'm pleased to report that The Boss rocked a partisan Hyde Park crowd for almost three hours on Sunday. Great set list, superbly paced IMO. The E street band are a well oiled machine and Bruce has fantastic energy for a guy who is 60.

I didn't see him until '85 but have seen him several times in the intervening years. He's not my favourite recording artist, although I think his last two albums are his best since 'Born in the USA', but he is one of the few live acts that I still make it a priority to see. Money well spent.

What odds have you got on hitting the 1000 post? I'm 100/1 against as I've got to cut my mum's grass and she hasn't got the internet.

Ah thanks for the info... looks like Tevez won't be signing today then...

What? Who; Tevez? Yea, you know, the little Argentinian fella, supposidly signing for us soon.

Yea, don't worry about it, most people have seemed to have forgotten about him, judging by this thread.

Just so everyone actually realises, it doesnt matter if you post a 15,000 word essay on here, it wont click over to the next page until there are 10 posts per page. So these long posts do nohing to hurrying to 1000 pages :-)

Cheers.

BASTARD!!!

Thats just stupid, the pages go on how many posts are on each one! After 10 posts it goes to the next page, not how long they are!

It's ridiculous that people are trying to get this to 1000 pages. Just discuss Tevez rather than post pointless rubbish in order to get there.
