I think you are maybe confusing Phuket and Pattaya.

Patong in Phuket is pretty much as you describe it (though the majority aren't Brits) and Kata/Karon area is similar to a lesser extent but the rest of Phuket is quite different.

There are deserted beaches and then there are packed beaches, touristy places and more typical Thai places, quiet, romantic places and then the madness of Soi Bangla etc. A bit of something for everyone IMHO.

It has to be said though that Phuket isn't the cheapest these days but for a mix of beach holiday, facilities and nightlife it still can't be beaten.

Just come back from there after 4 weeks chilling out.

From what I have heard these are place you should probably avoid

Ko Phi Phi - Everything wrong with mass building in Thailand - v. touristy and dirty
WAS EVEN WORSE BEFORE THE TSUNAMI

Ko Lipe - Same as above
]WAS GREAT UNTIL ABOUT 2 YEARS AGO THEN THE BUILDING WENT OUT OF CONTROL

Phuket - Just full of Brit tourists and probably akin to going to Malaga or the Costa del Sol.

I went to the South East near the border with Malaysia and it was great. Fab chance to island hop and was able to see 4 islands in 4 weeks, we took our time.

The best place I went to was a small island called Ko Bulon Lae where we met only 1 other English couple, really nice.
GREAT PLACE - BEEN THERE THREE TIMES AND LOVED IT

We spent 3 nights in Bangkok and got to see the majority of the temples and tourist sights, missed out on Condoms and Cabbages though which is a restaurant set up by a charity supporting prostitutes in Bangkok, a very worthy cause and great food too at a reasonable price.
THERE IS ONE IN PATTAYA WHICH ALSO HAS LOVELY BUNGALOWS

Make sure when you go to Bangkok that you stay near Khao San Road, but not on it.
other islands places I can recommend are
Koh Samet - 1 1/2 hours by bus from BK and lovely
Kih Chang - a huge island mixes the best and worst of Thailand do plent research but if you want a quiet time stay at the Nirvana Spa
Koh Mak,and Koh Kud unspoilt and like Thailand twenty years ago

Im off in 36 days for 26 days over there!

Anyone got any good tips for 4/5 days in Chang Mai?!

I went on a 2 day trek in the hills in Chang Mai. I'm a lazy twat and not really into walking myself but it's what everyone seems to do when they go to Chang Mai. Was pretty cool in the evenings and at night, we got to stay with some tribe in the hills.

I also found Chang Mai quite a bit cheaper than Bangkok and down South, so things like massages you might want to do there where it's cheaper.

PhuketBlue, do you go along to the vegetarian festival thing?

The village where I live is home to probably the biggest and best known vegetarian festival celebrations in the north of the island and despite being a true carnivore I do usually take the kids along to a few events and to sample the food.

I do, however, prefer to leave walking on burning coals, sticking spikes through ones face and similar type activities to the Thais.
