Our best ever right back that Pep didn't trust in the big games? CL final. Villa at home final day. He was class for us - but best ever is OTT
Book > Walker
Tony Book was a very good player but a much better captain. He was a proper leader, fearless, tough, and led by example. A real man in a real man's game. Tony took that forward to become a very good coach and manager. That's Tony's legend.
Tony was a defender, pure and simple. With Summerbee in front of him, he didn't have to put in surging runs etc. The game was different. Tony shared the Player of the Year award with Dave MacKay who, like him, was a strong leader. Different times... defenders winning POTY awards.
Kyle Walker was perfect for the modern game, where the full back has a number of roles, covering the centre, overlapping winger, backing up the wing back / midfield, and he could at least match anyone for speed.
Different men, different times. Both the right men at the right time for City. In my view, Tony Book's contribution to City's recovery and success in the 60s is beyond measure, but it was predominantly as a leader. A man who would run through brick walls for his team. But peak Kyle Walker was, in my opinion, the better footballer of the two great men.
There's not a lot in it, but I honestly think that Kyle Walker could have played at top level in the 60s and 70s. Tony Book wouldn't have lasted 15 minutes in the modern game, but he would still have been a bloody good captain - That’s the only area that he is well ahead of Walker imo.
Two great club men.
