It's basically an extreme version of what it used to be like in the UK, where women are basically infantilized. It's not that they consider women less important, it's that they see them as children in need of protecting and not capable of making their own decisions, hence the guardianship bollocks. A friend told me a story of when she was teaching English in New Zealand and a Saudi student was amazed to see that the receptionist was still working despite being heavily pregnant. In Saudi Arabia, it would be unthinkable for a pregnant woman to be working. When you think about it, most of sexism comes from the idea that women are in special need of protection from the big wide world and can't handle things themselves. That's why women weren't allowed to join the army, and why it's important to 'protect' them from sexual predators by controlling what they wear and where they go. It's also why they weren't considered competent enough to own property, vote, or make their own decisions about marriage and reproduction.Im no scholar but i think that women are generally regarded as second citizens in the Muslim faith mate.
