yes and no.

He could have refused on the grounds that he wasn't the best candidate.

The athletics team will have a lot of questions to answer once again. They get a shit load of funding, but once again seem to be coming up short. Apart from the one evening (and a cracker it was too) they really have done shite again. Given the amount of money we've thrown at athletics, why the fuck can't we get someone who can throw the hammer, or the javelin or the discus? Just don't get it. I'm not asking for Gold or Silver medals at every event, as that's just bullshit, but can't we just find people who can at least compete? We seem to get the odd individual that makes it into the final, but it's all too random.

Totally agree, they have received more funding and special treatment than any of the other teams yet the performances have been lamentable on the whole, even in events we used to be good in like middle distance running.

I do beleive British Athletics needs some new blood and a fresh approach, it's a very closed and clique ridden world you only have to look at the commentators on the BBC and the way they talk about it, we can improve and at least compete with the best, the rowers, cyclists, gymnasts etc have proved this

too right.
We need to put a new team with a fresh mentality into athletics. Look at what happened with cycling when the right people were in place.

I just hope that those in charge of dishing out our money see that there is a problem and there has been one for years in British Athletics, too many has beens (who have never been much, Foster for example) involved at the highest levels, we have some great facilities in this country as well so there is no excuse

To be fair we had finalists for the women in the hammer, who set a british record, our javelin thrower was injured 2 weeks before the games setting a british record, that would have won silver here. In the men our hammer guy finished 12th.

We're 4th in the athletics medal table which is a pretty fair effort, and we've had finalists in most events, and personal bests in many, the guy who finished 8th in the 800M last night would have won gold at the last 3 olympics for instance.

We should be proud of what we have done, and it could have been better as some of our favourites for things have under-performed.

The thing is that Athletics isn't seen as a "cool" profession for young kids. All the kids who are quick or show promise are usually snapped up by other more lucrative sports. There were 2 guys in my school who were rapid as fuck and always won the races easily in games and played in my football team and they were snapped up by scouts due to their blistering pace.

If you get two offers one to play football where you will have a very nice weekly wage, great life style and not that much training in the scheme of things or athletics where you will need to bust your balls on the track 6 days a week for 4 years, struggle to find funding and then all that for 10 seconds where you will probably come last due to the worlds other athletes being far better what are you going to pick?

it doesnt matter how much money they get given. the USA will always dominate track and field because of there population size.

Indeed, and the same applies to the Chinese and Russians. When you add in the Kenyan and Ethiopian athletes in the longer races, its little wonder the gold medals are thinnly spread amongst the rest of the world. More funding isn't the answer, its getting in younger athletes, and from what I've seen we're doing that, the young lad (18) who ran in the sprints only really started in January, and finished 3rd in his semi-final, narrowly missing out on the final.

As of tonight we are 4th in the medal table, only topped by USA, Russia and Jamaica.
