The 60s and 70s

a generation was put on the dole in the 80's by Thatcher......many never worked again....or went on the sick or committed suicide
I've worked all over the UK mate in Port Talbot, a shadow of it's former self. British steel sold off to whoever and Tata own it now and are about to shed about a quarter of it's workforce, around 1000 jobs. I've worked in North East where former miners, proud men and women still feel the knock on effect left by the legacy of Maggie.
I could go on...

The manufacturing sector has declined from 35% of GDP in 1970 to 12% in 2008.
That’s because it cost more to mine coal than it generated.

She ripped the bandage off that needed coming off.

Anyway, we’re getting political now but Manchester is far higher now on the economic chart than it was in the 70s.

There's pros and cons of post Thatcherism mate, I hated her TBH. I can't bring myself to vote for any political party nowadays, that's one reason why I don't get involved in political threads. The other reason is I don't post to argue the toss on subjects, especially politics so that's me done on the matter.
