The Album Review Club - End of Round #9 Break (page 1904)

That would be an interesting thread. Music being as subjective as it is, I think we’d have a lot of nominations to prove the concept wrong.
it would be fun. One proposes an act is ‘shit’. Then a debate happens a bit like the one this week. Then everyone scores 0 (not at all shit) - 10 (the night following 10 pints of Guinness and a double vindaloo, frightened to look in the pan kind of shit).
First up, U2, followed by Coldplay.

Kiss are a a strange band aren't they? People either love them or hate them!

I've never quite understood the intense dislike for Kiss. I think they've done a lot of great songs that put a smile on your face... I was made for loving you, Rock all nite, God gave rock n roll to you (yes, I know it was Argent), Beth, Crazy crazy nights, Lick it up, etc are just great pop/rock songs. You know if you see them live, you're getting a show. In some ways they remind me of AC/DC - they do great "party" songs that everyone likes and sings along to. Sure, other bands are better than Kiss but so I think that sometimes you just enjoy an album for it's own sake.

Anyway, onto Destroyer. I was quite surprised by the 'sound' of the album as it didn't sound like many of the other Kiss songs/albums I'd heard before. I guess the main part of their music I've heard before is from the 80s so it was nice to hear a slightly more "raw" album than I was first expecting.

I thought it was a decent album. If the same album had been made by another band, I'm sure many of the scores would go up a point or two. I think it's a decent mid-70s rock album. It's not Led Zeppelin but Kiss don't pretend to be them. They made good pop/rock songs and there's a few decent ones on here.

It's a 6 from me.

So you can’t be commercially successful and shit? Ok.

maybe a subject for a new thread. Commercially successful and shit.

it’s ok to think them shit mate, just the same as it’s ok to think they have merit. It’s just a difference of opinion and taste. Both of us are correct.
It’s multi-faceted. For instance, I loved the Police, but thought Sting’s solo stuff was pretty pretentious and not good, thought Sting himself an insufferable **** during all this, but he then mellowed out quite a bit when he got older and became a rather thoughtful chap.

I think instead of shit or not shit, we should do an overrated or underrated thread. The “rated ness” being either general popularity or how music critics view them.

Fixed.

(I fixed the Beatles not for me, but because anti-Beatles types are among the most entertaining and pro-Beatles types are nearly as).

It's not that they are shit...there's no way they could sell so many records worldwide if they didn't have some sort of musical talent...but it's just that it's been done better, a lot better, by far more talented people than them.

I have a mate in America who loves them, worships the very ground they make up on, but then he likes Billy Joel as well. Go figure as they say over the pond.

I've always thought of Kiss as an average band that Americans love...see also Pat Benatar, Journey etc etc...

Still, that's musical taste for you!

I don't love them or hate them Like you, I scored this album a 6 because I thought it was OK but to my ears, there were no special songs on it.

You mention AC/DC and this is a good way of illustrating this point for me. I'm not a big fan, but there are a handful of their songs that are absolute, bona-fide, first punching the air classics: "Thunderstruck", "Back in Black", "It's A Long Way To The Top If You Wanna Rock N Roll" "Highway To Hell". I could listen to these several times a week and probably not get bored. I didn't hear one song on Destroyer that I'd definitely want to hear again in the future. It was an OK listen and I liked two of three of the songs, but I didn't hear any big meaty hooks or riffs or classic choruses.

There may well be a KISS album that has this type of song on it - "Crazy, Crazy Nights" is my favourite song of theirs and it's great. I just felt a bit underwhelmed with this album.

Not sure about that. I think there's more than enough threads where people can vent their spleen and score low if they hate something.

Having said that, there are bands I love where they haven't necessarily done one great album but their best songs are spread across a several albums. Maybe a band thread where somebody knocks together a playlist of 10 songs and says: I like this band, and gets people to vote comment?

The idea of nominating a well-known band just so people can knock them doesn't appeal to me.

It’s multi-faceted. For instance, I loved the Police, but thought Sting’s solo stuff was pretty pretentious and not good, thought Sting himself an insufferable **** during all this, but he then mellowed out quite a bit when he got older and became a rather thoughtful chap.
I think that Ten Summoner's Tales is a really good album with some clever songs on it and is much better than anything The Police did (although I do like "Message in a Bottle").

The Police were a fine band and I really loved Stewart Copelands drumming. Bang on re Sting. I wouldn’t know if he had mellowed I’m afraid.
I do love that folk are trying to move me away from ‘shit’ to ‘overrated’ or ‘limited’ or ‘not my cup of tea’. What a polite bunch.
I will try to do better in future but ultimately do reserve the right to use ‘Shit’ for those Albums that IMO deserve that sobriquet. ;-)
