The Album Review Club - End of Round #9 Break (page 1904)

If they were shit, as some of you think, they wouldn't be so hugely successful. Some of my friends that like KISS have played in bands and recorded records, another is a classical and opera buff as well as a rock fan - they are not people who tolerate bands that are actaully shit.

I can't speak for anyone else but I don't think they are funny but they are fun, which is entirely their intention.

I mentioned the KISS principle before but it absolutely applies to the band: keep it simple stupid could be their credo.

They reall would look stupid is they went out and tried to play music like Rush made up and dressed as they are with the kind of show they put on. The music and lyrics are simple by design. They are a party hearty on a Saturday night band - not that all their fans (e.g. me) fall into that category and band members that did were exited.

They are very smart, professional guys who have come with a package that works. It's not cynical though, Simmons and Stanley love music and what they do, they long since needed to do it for the money.
I don't call them 'shit' but limited musicians yes.
I think my point about brand/PR....explains to me at least, why they sold so many records.......possibly their live show too, however as I said, I haven't seen them live personally.

So you can’t be commercially successful and shit? Ok.

maybe a subject for a new thread. Commercially successful and shit.

it’s ok to think them shit mate, just the same as it’s ok to think they have merit. It’s just a difference of opinion and taste. Both of us are correct.
I don't think there are many bands, certainly not as succesful as Kiss have been for 50 years that are shit, plenty that I don't like, but that doesn't mean they aren't very good at what they do. Just means they aren't my particular cup of tea.

Ace's is commonly agreed to be the best.
Criss' is awful - from memory - I've never bought it on cd and my vinyl copy - not played since 70's - is a remainder.
The other two are ok.
Simmons was most disappointing given the starry cast of guests.
Stanley's has one of the best track of any of them: Tonight You Belong To Me.
Agree with all of this!

I've got all the picture discs on the wall, they're certainly a talking point when we have guests!

One last time.
I obviously haven’t been clear
I think Kiss are a shit band.
Thankyou.

You could say the same for Kiss fans who get a bit sensitive about criticism and start to wave personal fortunes and gold records about…

erm, winky face emoji

Oh dear, if I was sensitive about criticism do you think I would have chosen review this album, and for those that maybe didn't twig, quite a bit of the review was deliberately OTT / tongue in cheek.

Fair enough. I did listen to it with an open mind, just wasn’t for me. There’s no arguing with their popularity, they obviously tick a lot of peoples boxes

That would be an interesting thread. Music being as subjective as it is, I think we’d have a lot of nominations to prove the concept wrong.
