The Album Review Club - Week #127 - (page 1545) - Definitely Maybe - Oasis

One of my most beloved records is Split Enz’ Waiata. “History Never Repeats” is one of my all-time favo(u)rite songs. It’s funny — I never thought of them as art rock. For “Siren”, I agree with you that’s it’s more the sonics in general and the flourishes that make this special, but I like the variety of tempos and styles and the strong thematic too. Thanks for reviewing as always!
Fog, I would be interested in what you think of any of Spilt Enz earlier works. I was wondering if you decided that Waiata (which expanded on the influence Neil Finn had on Tim Finns writing on True Colours and how commercial success altered their product significantly ) made it worth your while to listen to earlier material along the lines of what Flesh and Blood may have inspired you to do likewise. We all know that time and what you do with it waits for no one but I have much of their early stuff good and bad and given your excellent time management skills I thought you might have made time to delve into some of early Split Enz earlier material.

At the risk of upsetting Rob they are well ahead of Midnight Oil in my pecking order.

It doesn't upset me too much. I like some Split Enz songs, but it was more of an interest to see what they were up to before Neil Finn founded Crowded House (#3 on my all-time favourite acts list - seen them a fair few times in concert) and Tim Finn solo (got a few of his albums and also saw him live).

But as for Split Enz being better than Midnight Oil, I know Foggy will agree with you but Midnight Oil are far superior in my opinion. Just listening to Jim Moginie and Martin Rotsey on their guitars would be enough!

I am not so sure Rob , I enjoy much of what Midnight Oil have done from Wedding Cake Island onwards but I am guessing you are a much bigger fan of Crowded House than Split Enz where as I preferred Neil when he was in Split Enz albeit he was writing to his hero's Lennon and McCartney IMO for much of his time in Crowded House.

I fully understand (the minute albeit I know about your taste in music) why you would prefer the Oils to Split Enz especially their pre 1980 albums as so do the vast majority of my family and friends.
