The Album Review Club - Week #143 - (page 1884) - I Should Coco - Supergrass

Looking forward to this being decrypted / explained

Once Rob finishes his cereal!
The name of a National album. @Black&White&BlueMoon Town has dropped a few hints as to what he nominated. Or he's learnt how to Clarkie. As for the rest I'm mainly clueless but my best guess on our mystery nominator of Dominique Dumont would be @GoatersLeftShin (or is that right shin?).

Nothing outstanding for me on this playlist but a couple worth exploring further including the aforementioned Dominique Dumont, a nice album and I was intrigued by the Daniel Donato but didn't get as much from the album as I thought. I did put my Billy Strings and country loving son on to it though and that stirred the thought that this nomination could be from @threespires

I don't remember being overly impressed with Jason Isbell when he was up for review on the thread but this track does make me think he is worth another listen. Thought I should have liked Yard Act more but felt a bit too gimmicky. Surprisingly enjoyed the Ian Hunter, not usually my cup of tea but it's just a straightforward fun track and honourable mentions to Real Estate and Rival Sons but neither enough to encourage further exploration.

A bit tardy with getting my votes in, hopefully not too late and I best get on with that now.

Sorry for the delay guys, crawled out of bed, unpacking is now done, and I will dedicate whatever time it takes today to get this done today - hopefully this afternoon, this evening at the latest.

Whilst you are all waiting for the results, I'll do the first "reveal". Daniel Donato was my selection. As a whole, the album has a bit too many straight country tracks even for me, but there are some absolute gems on there. Before I went away, I watched the live performances of "Dance in the Desert" and "Weathervane" and it seems that not only is Donato a fabulous guitarist, his band are superb, especially his keyboard player. I think he may well be an artist to watch for the future - if he can handle the crossover from cosmic country to different genres.

That was a jokey reference to the ghosts of playlists past, not in any way a complaint!

I did think B&W was the National, and his correcting me on the two albums seemed a giveaway too, but tbh, couldnt find anyone to fit the Dylan track, as it has to be someone hearing it for the first time. And as it is from an album we reviewed, and I know he likes to go through albums he missed from this thread, it seemed to fit. Maybe I overthunk it.

I broadly remembered discussing the National with you the Painting of a Panic Attack week, when I took up your recommended Sleep Well Beast and took to it as imo their best album.

I put a few clues about as well, for anyone looking to put two and two together.

It seems i should have read the rules! I thought close of play was tomorrow :( For what it’s worth I’d have had @RobMCFC for Daniel Donata ( honest) and @BimboBob for Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs - one of my favourites on the list, and @Coatigan for the Viagra Boys which I also really liked. Oh and @OB1 for Extreme… not so enjoyable though

I put Bimbo down for Pigs7, partly the song fit, partly once he tried to frame me for it, I doubled down.

I did consider Rob for Donata, but again DBT just seemrd a better fit. That's the issie with these, you get one wrong, you are likely wrong on another by default.

What gave me away then? As I assume you don't read the playlist thread where I've been mentioning a wee circle of prominent swedish stoner rock bands.

As an interesting aside whilst Rob unpacks his briefs, which regular contributor's do people feel most closely aligned to musically?
For me it would be @OB1 who seems to have some decent rock roots. @Coatigan for the Indie side and @BimboBob for all round randomness and largely decent tastes.
Apologies for naming the above who may now wish to distance themselves from my comments!

Interesting question.

Probably Threespires for his sheer breadth. One of the only posters I can discuss pretty much anything from celt fiddle folk to tuareg blues. B&W on the indie side, some of the overlaps are scary. You on the heavier side, and of course the Biff'. Doogle for anything dour. And strangely, although at the start it seemed like Rob and my tastes were very different, I have found our opinions and impressions overlapping more than we maybe care to notice.
