The Album Review Club - Week #145 - (page 1923) - Tellin' Stories - The Charlatans

Only 6 scores in for this, which is the lowest we've had for a very long time.

Post Champions League hangover? Weather-related? Something else? (OK, BlueHammer has an excellent excuse).

I've not had chance to listen due to going to Turkey and then having to catch-up work immediately after getting home on Monday luchtime. Left the office after 8pm yesterday and in office today. I usually listen when WFH unless it is a record I have and I don't have this Big Star; I have their first album, which I like so I will listen to Radio City but not in time to score it.

Not much to say about this, other than I really enjoyed it. There have been a few comparisons made and while it has elements of those, and at times Del Amitri as well, to me it feels most like a much later band that I really really like, in mood in particular. Likely had a significant influence on them. I was a bit reluctant to mention it, as they could well have been my next nomination and any clues would be gubbed, but gone another way now. The band is Portugal. The Man (that's their name, with the fullstop), and although it is slightly more contemporary, the mood of it and a lot of the sound is very similar, worth a spin for anyone that likes this. So taking this as a more original precursor was a nice experience.

The thing I didn't so much like, which Fog talked about, is the chops and changes of mood. I am not a fan of albums that jump between moods and tempos. Unless they really pull off an experience, most feel a copout to me, a paint by numbers of making sure a record doesn't get 'boring'. And that's what this one felt like to me. We've had a pacey one, lets have a slow one, and back. That is about the only thing that slightly let it down for me, and even then it is moreto do with the order than the content. Overall though a good strong 8.

Big Star's Radio City finally limped to 9 votes, but the consistently high scoring sees it finish just outside the top 10. with an average of 6.89. Another very popular nomination from @bennyboy - well done, sir!

Before the next nomination, just a reminder that I will be away for a couple of weeks, so when Wednesday rolls around (21st and 28th June) feel free to carry on as normal. @Coatigan has generously offered to tally the scores, so he'll post here and pass them onto me to update the spreadsheet later.

With that, it's now @OB1 who gets the honour of making the first nomination of the "City are Champions of Europe" era!
