The Album Review Club - Week #147 - (page 1942) - Blonde On Blonde - Bob Dylan

Slightly off topic ......

The National have somehow slipped through my listening net over the years so I listened to "Alligator" and "The Boxer" yesterday. Quite good.

Last year, I stumbled across Matt Berningher's solo album, Serpentine Prison, and it's incredibly good. This is one case where the deluxe version is worth listening to as there are some great songs in the last few. I listen to this every so often and always really enjoy it.

'Hmm, what is it I dislike about this album? I know, now I'll go listen to more of that elsewhere'.

I listened on the basis that I enjoyed the solo album and it reminded me I hadn't listened to any albums by The National.

I don't think that they sound like Frightened Rabbit to be honest - the producer link was just the prod I needed.

I think it's the most recent National albums where the sound is more similar. Ironically where the National have lost a little bit for me and the sound "suits" Frightened Rabbit more. Maybe it's just what you get used to though and could be if I'd followed Frightened Rabbit beforehand I wouldn't be so keen on the production of this one.

Great choice @Coatigan,

I’ve really enjoyed listening to this, can’t say the same about the Mrs
as she hates my love of melancholic music.
As we’re on vacation I’ve had to find the right time to escape from her
to enable me to listen to it.

It’s starts very well for me , the intro from ‘Death Dream’ is straight out
of the closing credits to one of my favourite TV series ‘Gomorrah’.
I think this song set the scene for a lot of the album.
As others have said ‘Get Out’ is a great song and lots of others.
‘Die like Rich Boy’ is my particular fave, great lyrics and the musical accompaniment is more to my taste.
I get echoes of all different bands on this album, like some have already
said. Band of Horses, The National, Arcade Fire ,Lord Huron and on ‘Still want to be here’Snow Patrol and The Reindeer Section’
I listened to the deluxe version and although the three additional songs aren’t bad, I have to agree they make the album drawn out and a wee bit repetitive.

Thanks for nominating this @Coatigan

I knew nothing about the band of the late Scott Hutchinson, but having now read up on him ,it appears he was not only a talented musician and lyricist but a budding artist,a sad loss. This album has peeked my interest so I’ll be listening to their other work and Scott’s solo album ‘Owl John’.

8/10

My life's just to hectic to fit more Music in, I wish I could - Only listened to this nomination fully yesterday
i get that, which is why I suggested only 5 tracks and as OB1 suggested a time limit at say 40mins.
I also agree with releasing it on a different day .

Agreen with it on a different day, straddles two albums on here, or vice versa.

If it takes off, I'd maybe use Eamo's suggestion and avoid 'scoring' the playlists. Particularly if they are going to be varied.

Just while we are slightly off topic, I thought of you @FogBlueInSanFran earlier this week. Was listening to a song called Penny Candle off 'And You Will Know us by the Trail of Dead's' (catchy right) new album. Which sounds quite Everlongy, and I thought, what would Foggy say. Speaking of Everlong, if you haven't heard the Scala and Kolacny Brothers cover of it before, get yoursel' some goosebumps to help your circulation while recovering.

Regarding Mancitydoogle's playlist idea, it seems that there are enough people interested.

If I've read all the comments correctly, there seems to be general agreement on:-
  • Starts on a different day to albums on this thread.
  • Should be 5 songs (or maybe longer as long as it's no more than 40 mins) - I think @Mancitydoogle should get to decide this.
  • It can have a binding theme, but doesn't have to.
  • The playlist creator should provide a write-up, explaining why they have chosen the songs.
  • There will be no scoring
Now all we have to decide is:-
  • Is it going to run in here or in it's own thread?
  • Who's going to be chairman/organiser?
  • How do we come up with the creators list - I got a bit of pushback when I created this thread and suggested a closed shop, so beware - especially if it's in its own thread :)

I suggest only one per week and in the same order as the review club so nobody is posting new nominations in the same week.
So when this starts we start at number one of the review club.
Hope that makes sense.lol
