The Album Review Club - Week #147 - (page 1942) - Blonde On Blonde - Bob Dylan

I suggest only one per week and in the same order as the review club so nobody is posting new nominations in the same week.
So when this starts we start at number one of the review club.
Hope that makes sense.lol
Yes, I think somebody commented that we should ensure that one person doesn't have an album/playlist nomination in the same week. I can't imagine that will be too difficult, but good point.

Regarding Mancitydoogle's playlist idea, it seems that there are enough people interested.

If I've read all the comments correctly, there seems to be general agreement on:-
  • Starts on a different day to albums on this thread.
  • Should be 5 songs (or maybe longer as long as it's no more than 40 mins) - I think @Mancitydoogle should get to decide this.
  • It can have a binding theme, but doesn't have to.
  • The playlist creator should provide a write-up, explaining why they have chosen the songs.
  • There will be no scoring
Now all we have to decide is:-
  • Is it going to run in here or in it's own thread?
  • Who's going to be chairman/organiser?
  • How do we come up with the creators list - I got a bit of pushback when I created this thread and suggested a closed shop, so beware - especially if it's in its own thread :)

I would suggest (and it is a suggestion only)
-separate thread, not here. This one seems to work as is, limited in numbers but fairly regular and consistent.
- list could be the current one in reverse, potentially. Or go with the tried and tested, if intereated PM and generate the list in order of recieved interest. That way it isn't a 'closed shop' but not chaos either. Others can then nip in and contribute, and if there is no scoring, not relying on any real consistency either.
- lastly, I'd suggest it doesnt have to be 5 songs each time, say 3-5 is ok, in case someone wants to keep it to the point, although imagine most might take up the full 5.

Thanks Rob, well summarised.

I think it should have its own thread.
i‘m happy for anyone to throw their hat in the ring, I’m still working so fairly busy
and not great at IT excel spreadsheets or whatever, but if no one wants the gig
I’ll do it.
I think it should be open to all and sundry as we could maybe do with some new blood.
I think max of 5 songs or less but max of 40 mins so maybe 2 for the Prog Rock fans lol.

Yeah the last 3 songs after Rich Boy have been subsequently added, and while not bad they unnecessarily prolong the album. Otherwise, 400 bones, Lump Street and Rich Boy are actually a pretty strong finish, after a bit of filler here and there. Reading Foggy's review sounds like he stuck to the original length, which is nice.
I find that trait on the streamed formats slightly frustrating at times in the context of this thread.

Some of the albums I’ve been looking at as my choice fall into the same trap of messing with the song playlist.
I think I will stress where the album should start and finish when it comes to my choice. It can make a difference to the new listener’s experience.

This album does perhaps suffer slightly of too much of the same but although nothing completely stands out, they all are decent tunes and the album in this format is an easy listen, so I didn’t have a big problem with it.
I found myself putting The Maccabees on immediately after playing it today to keep the easy listen theme going and it was seamless. The lyrics may be different but the music, vocals and production were as if it was the same band.

I liked this album and respect the emotional attachment @Coatigan has to it but I don’t have that attachment.

I will give it a solid 7.

Agree about separate thread.
Suggest 30-35 mins range.
Themed or un-themed. Posters choice.

Or one for us Yes fanatics.

I’m happy to go with whatever format is decided as long as Kiss songs are banned.

Sorry @Coatigan this is not really where I'm at with music.
Lack of real musical instruments, mostly sequenced synths and drum machines, electronic music. The whole feel for me is morbid and darkly emotional, listening to it it doesn't give me any pleasure at all. It brings on feelings of glumness bereft of all joy.
Lyrically it has some attraction for me if I'm in that mood, but its' let down by unambitious music that just "drifts".

Like abandoned unloved driftwood. It doesn't solve anything for me, it doesn't give me anything. It's just too morbid.
Not for me I'm afraid.
4/10

Enjoyed reading that. The only thing I don't get is what you mean about 400 bones returning to a difficult place. I find it the most hopeful/happy song on the album, and a real intimate lovely love ballad. A shared post act moment losing sense of place and time, and savoured so.

Incidentally Die like a rich boy, to me is also a love song first and foremost. Which is becoming a bit of a jokey repeat line, but I do feel that in every song, there is at least a hint of an unnamed loved 'you' being undertoned, but not laboured.

If you have some time left before the next one, I'd give a few songs on Midnight Organ a whirl. Or if you want their 'happiest' work as a counter, Winter of Mixed Drinks is probably it to lighten the mood. Kind-of.

PS, how are you feeling, how's your back.
Thanks Coat. Upon reflection you are right about the lyrics but I was thinking more tone and pace. After this record I definitely want to spend a bit more time with their catalogue though I recogniz(s)e this one apparently sounds different. Thanks for asking — on some muscle-relaxants and stronger anti-inflams and stretching and it’s much much better.

If anyone’s interested, my right foot hurts like fook.
